PORTLAND CASE IN POINT Philadelphia!. Makes Known That He Does Hot Approve Efforts of Loral Men to Bnlld Cp Business of Their Own. As sji illustration of h!s willingness to monopolise the soap Industry. In which he Is engaged, an Incident Is told of the meeting of Joseph Fels, the Philadelphia millionaire and single tax advocate, and P. Feldman, president of the Mount Hood Soap Company, of Portland, which took place on the oc casion of the recent visit of the Fels party. In this meeting Mr. Fels made known his displeasure at the manu facturers In Portland of a naptha soap similar to that made by himself and upon which hie wealth was largely bMr. Feldman. In telling of the Inci dent yesterday, said that he. In com pany with J. C. Luckel. of the Luckel, King & Cake Soap Company, attended the Kels lecture at the Masonic Temple on Tuesday night. Having a brotherly feeling for any man engaged In the soap business, Mr. Feldman made him self known to Mr. Fcl and Invited him to come to visit the Mount Hood Soap Company-e plant on Fourth street. North. Mr. Fels promised to do so. and an automobile wae tendered him. Mr. Feldman called next day at the Im perial Hotel and there met Mr. Fels. Again It waa told to Mr. Fels who Mr. Feldman was. Acquaintance Is Kenewed. "What did you come to aee me fort" asked Mr. Fels. "I called almply because you are In the soap business and I am engaged In the same liner was Mr. Keldman s reply. 'Let me aee; doe not your firm put up Feldman's Naptha soapT" Inquired Fels. . "Yes." said Mr. Feldman. "and a very good soap It Is. I am proud of the brands, being , that they stand among thoae ranking the highest In the United Slates." "You know, of course, that I make Fela' naptha soapT" hinted the Phils dclphlan. "My name was handed down by my forefathers." explained the Portland man. "flowever. If we are Infringing upon your soap rights there Is a law which you can appeal to so that you may secure such protection as you are entitled to." "Ah. my dear Mr. Feldman." said Fels. "there ta a higher law than the courts. There la the moral law." "When you put your good on the market. Mr. Fels." answered Mr." Feld man." you forget one thing." "What's thatr Goods Not Fenced In. "Building a fence around your goods." "Still, there I a moral law." com mented th Phlladolphlan. "Why do you live In a house, Mr. Felr "For protection." "Well." concluded Mr. Feldman. "that Jut why I make op; for pro tectionof my family o that they may have the neceaalllea of life." In commenting upon the Interview, Mr. Feldman said: "I am convinced that Mr. Fels Is engaged In a cam paign not of spreading the gospel of single tax, but In securing such noto riety and such advertising as he can get of hia soap product. The concern of which he i the principal stockholder enn easily afford to pay from I50.00U to $100,000 for advertising his soap. He is a shrewd man and I would not be surprised. If the facta could be ascer tained, that It la nothing more than a cute advertising scheme." SUNDAY IS CONCERT DATE Second Afternoon of Muslo to Be Given at Helllft- February B.
