delayed by the washouts got through yes
terday. Tha day's arrival were five cars
of bananas, two cara of orange, on car
of lemons, two cara of c:ery, on car of
cabbage, one car of aweet polatoee and one
of mixed vegetablea. The demand In all
llnea waa brisk. There wera no material
change In price.

when CO boxea of Alaska halibut, that ar
rived Irst night, were sold lit lw 'cents per
pound. This Is the hlxhefCp'rlr. ever ob
tained for halibut on the Scaille market.
The demand for Japanese oranges Is so
light and tha supply so heavy that prices
ere badly demoralised. All klmls of quota
tions prevail, ranging from 5".j 7.", cents per
bundle for repacked stock. The demand for
California orangea was brlrk. The demand
Is principally for large sixes, which com
mand a premium.
A car of fancy applea Is du Mondy.
A steamer was due today with a large
conslKpment of California profltffe, but did
not arrive In time to get the produc on th
street for distribution.
Th potato market Is unchanged. The
onion market was eery firm. '.lealera are
having difficulty In obtaining stock In
Oregon.

don sales have had more Interest for the
Boston wool trade tM. week than th. mar
ket Itself, apparently, although th. manu
facturer, hav. by no meana neglected the
market a. far as sampling and buying sub

Interest has been dt.played somewhst
more for foreign offerings, which are. of
course, limited, while Ohio have been sesriy,
but not ao active as last week. Several falr
alsed lota of territory clothing have moved
at prices on a parity with the last two or
three weeks. Kales of territory, subject to
confirmation, have been well distributed.

remain quiet, but prlres are steady and
nominally unchanged. On the spot, fancy is

NEW TOBIC Jan. 20. The stock market
toiluy opened with an Irregular and lower
tendency, made some recovery, sold, back
again, relapsed Into stagnation, and in the
Una! hour recovered the larger part of the
loss and mad a few substantial gains. Trad,
was palpably profeMional.
A majority ot th. standard issues gave a
fairly good account of themselves, with
some backwardness In 1'nlted States Steel,
Union Pacinc Canadian Pacific and Norfcdk
ft W'estcrn. L'nlted States Steel preferred
waa an active Issue with a smart advance
on the day. The coal shares. Southern pa
cific. Si. Paul. Hill Issues and Southern
Railway common and preferred were the
features ot strength In the railroad group,
wtrie the metal stocks and ga and tele
phone Issues held, much of their gains of
the early week.
Th trength of American Smelting and
other copper storks w attended by cir
cumstantial reports of a better demand for
copper metal, but these were accepted with

Trade In General Is Slower and
Prices Tend Lower, Except on
Butcher Cattle.
Receipts at the stockyard yeterday were
light. A number of ahlpment. hav. been
delayed by washout and are looked for to
day. Aside from th sale of a big bunch
of lambs all the business done was In cattle
carried over from the preceding day. A
lot of 231 steers sold at 10 and other steers
brought from 15.50 to $4.25. Cows ranged
from 82 to 4.50. The lambs that were
disposed of. numbering 531 head, brought
84.90.
The market In xeneral ha. an ea.ler un
dertone. For the past two week cattle
have arrived freely and steer have weak
ned materially. Butcher stock, on th
other hand, haa held up.fulrly well. In th
mutton line the demand haa been poor.
Hogs hold their own.
The receipts today were 147 sheep and 50
horses. Shippers of the stork mere Easley
Bros., Creswell, 1 car of sheep, and the
t'nlted 6tates Army Quartermaster. San
Francisco, 3 cr of horses.

day. The tendency was toward strengtn
earlv In the day. but when the break came,
offerings seemed to pour in from every Ul
rectlon. Advices from Minneapolis, where,
the market had been relatively weak all
day, told of mills having .ceased to gr.na

to be heavy, indicating that the 'new crop
movement from Australia and Argentina was

until the last half hour. The final tone
was weak and near the bottom. May ranged

Heavy selling of corn by the country for
Febiuary shipment turned the market eaK
for that cereal. May fluctuated between
50c and 50H(S50c. with last sales a shade
off at 509 504c. Cash corn was higher
early, but later weak. No. 2 yellow closed

ernte changes In corn May varied from
