than by contract: extending the power
to the State . Kallread Commission to

the salaries of the Commissioners
$4000 for counties of the first-class,
down to $800 In the lowest class. The

BAKKR, Or.. Jan. 18. (Special.)
The committee appointed by the Baker
Commercial Club is highly elated over
the prospects of the site selected by
Bowerman being rejected by the Gov
ernor and state board. The people of
this city have been strongly of the
opinion that a square deal was not
given in the selection, and have re
ceived offers from La Grande and
Union to fight the case. The Commer
mercial Club of Union has offered to
assist the Baker committee Jn having
the matter decided upon merit.
Baker will lay particular stress upon
the opening of the great Harney Val
ley, which will make Baker the most
central point for all of Eastern Oregon,
All arguments will be prepared In con
venient form and be ready for submis
sion to the board at the proper time.
