KSW YORK, Jan, 0. Absence of any fur
ther compllcatlona In the local banking
situation was of material assletanoe to the
daya atoeic market. The concerted and ef
fectual methods empluyed by powerful In
terests to confine the trouble to Its source
were received with lively satisfaction In
stock exchange circles. Practically all of
the better-known securities touched the
highest level In some weeks. With gains In
the more obscure Issues.
Another favorable feature was the con
tinuance on even a larger scale of the In
quiry for bonds. Totsl transactions were
the largest of many daya
Trlcee receded and the stock market lan
guished during the early afternoon, chiefly
on further realizing for profits, but the
early activity was resumed In the last hour,
the closing shoalng general gains, but be
low the day's best prices.
The slUht activity In Pacific Mall was
associated with tha Introduction of a ship
subsidy bill In congress today, although the
proposed measure ellmlnatca the trans-Pa-rtflc
lines and favors only those serving
South America.
A factor In the day's business was the
greater ease In money, which opened at 4
per cent and soon declined fractionally on
offerlnxs In excess of demand.
Local banks made large cash gains from
the sub-treasury. and snrface conditions
point to further gems from that 'quarter
with resultsnt strengthening of cotton bills.
Iilsconnts abroad held firm and tha London
markets were dull and heavy.

Result of the Day's Manipulation at
Chicago In the Gain of An
other Cent Corn Is
Also Higher.
CHICAGO. Jan. 9. According to one au
thority, the secret of the hot campaign by
the bull leaders ih wheat' was an effort to
establish a level where large holdings could
be unloaded at a handsome profit. Smaller
primary receipts helied turn the tide In
general to the buying side- in addition,
aggressive support by the promoters of
higher prices became so apparent that specu
lators who ordinarily take the bear posi
tion were plainly Intimidated. A falling off
In the visible supply came as a timely aid
to the bulls, and there was a similar effect
from the diminished ' total of the suppllea
on ocean passage. There were two strong
swells to the market during the session,
each followed by a moderate reaction, but
the closing tone was firm. May ranged
from $1.004 to l.01'4 1.02, with last
sales "4ftlc up at fl.01.
Hedging sales of various amounts pre
