Portland stood fifth tmom cities of
tne United States In TOlume of building
operations last year, aa measured by
the amount represented In permits la
sued for new structures, according; to
the American Contrsctor, of Chicago.
With a total of t:o.04.7. Portland
waa beaten on the Pacific Coast only
by Los Angeles; which showed a total
of 121.100.000. The percentage of gain
In Portland was S3, while other Coast
cities showed a loss, which waa mora
than 10 per cent In Seattle and in San
Francisco reached more than Zi per
cent.
Portland was in twelfth place In 1901
and in advancing to fifth position
climbed over the heads of both San
Francisco and Seattle. Others that fell
behind this city were St, Louis, Detroit.
Pittsburg. Washington and Newark.
Kansas City snd Minneapolis advanced
enough to rank last year among the
first 10. having been farther down the
list the year before.
