Oregon Pioneer Was Prominent in
Early State Politics.
Albert H. Brown, one of ths most
prominent Democratic! politicians In
Oregon In the '70s. and Stats Treasurer
during the administration of ex-Gov
ernor Grover, died yesterday at his
home. 344 East Sixteenth street, aged
88 years.
Mr. Brown was born In Baton Rouge,
a January 6, 1828. He served Curing
the Mexican War as a volunteer from
his native state. At the close of th
war he crossed the plains to California,
rrlvlng there In 1849. He engaged In
mule teaming between San Francisco
and Portland until 1S62, when hs sot
tied at Auburn, Or., in Baker County,
at that time a thriving mining camp.
He was elected to the State Senate
from that county in 1871, and In 1874
was elected Stste 'Treasurer, serving
until 1878. In that year ha retired
from politics and returned to hia farm
In Baker County, where he remained
until 1897, when be came to Portland,
He was known throughout the state
during the years between 1885 and 1885
as one of the ablest men In tha Demo
rratlc party. He was one of ths oldest
Masons on ths Pacific Coast, having
Joined the order In Treka, Cal., In 1858.
He later served as grand master of ths
lodge In Baker.
Mr. Brown la survived by his wife,
two daughters and a son, as follows
Mrs. Frances E. B. White, wife of Sam
uel White; Mlsa Ella Brown and Asa L.
Brown, of Baker County. Tha funeral
service will be held tomorrow morning
