Bend waa witnessed last night, the oc
casion being the first reading of the
ordinance granting J. D. Crary of
Aberdeen, who represents Pennsylvania
capital, a franchise for an electric car-
ne through and between tne cities 01
South Bend and Raymond.
A mass meeting, held a week ago.
had demonstrated that a large majority
of citizens favored the granting of the
franchise, although it was an open
secret that thre. Councilmen. enough In
this instance to defeat the measure,
were more or less opposed and the
presence In the council cnamDer or
more than 200 citizens was taken aa a
demonstration in favor of the paasage
of the ordinance. A large number of
those present spoke In favor or its
passage and only thre; against it.
The ordinance will come to Its final
readlng'at the first Council meeting in
January and, it is now believed, will
pasa without difficulty. Mr. Crary
promises to begin construction work as
early In tne Spring as the weather will
permit.

forecast, the damp area was to bo widely
extended within 36 hours, so that no part
of the Fall-sown crop would be without
some benefit. Primary rsceipts were liberal
and another flour mill at Duluth shut down,
