REWARD OUT FOR SLAYER Cspsule Containing Enough Poison to Kill 1 5 Men and More Money and Cartridges Are Found at Scene of Crime. SALEM. On., Nov. I. (Special.) A mysterious letter from Jefferson. Or., a capsule containing; enough stryohnine to kill 15 men found nesr ths scene of ths tragedy, a wagonload of men aeen by autolsts shortly before ths time of tha killing, these offered tha only fresh possible clews today to tha Iden tity of the murderer of J. E. Roberta, a wealthy real estate dealer of thla place who last night was shot and killed and robbed of a large sum of money, per haps nearly 17000. on the dreary, can opied bridge over Mill Creek, south of Salem. , Five hundred dollars reward for the arrest and conviction of the murderer waa offered today by the County Court and Sheriff Mlnto and his deputies worked tirelessly, but tha assassin Is still at large. The letter from Jefferson has not been seen by tbe officers, but It Is sup posed to have proposed to Roberts a business deal to carry out which he may have been on the road when he mot hla death, but they are convinced that it waa a decoy and have hopes of securing It to weave with the 12-call-ber revolver left by the desperado In his flight and the strychnine capsules found under this bridge this morning into a net which will fasten the crime upon aome person known In Salem and familiar with the affairs and habits of ths dead man. Gnn Dealers Throw No Light. It was found todsy near the bridge, together wita seven snens m u same caliber as the revolver used by tbe mnA mm -w. v from him s f trr It had fulfilled Its mission. The verdict of four locsl chemists a as to ma erieri that the quantity of drug In tha capsule waa sufficient to make way with mors than a doxen man. Druggists Are Questioned. Diligent Inquiry among local druggists hss fslled to disclose a recent purchaser of this kind of poison and none haa ever furnished It In cspsule form. The fact that the cspsule was found with the .-cAlibr shells seems to es tablish that It was once the property of Roberts' murderer. Whether It was his Intention to commit suicide If threatened with " capture or for what use he Intended It. can only ba conjectured. Perhaps the most Interesting and mys terious feeture of the grim tragedy which ths day brought forth la the muss ing letter, purporting to have come from Jefferson, asking tha real aetata dealer to make a loan on a farm. t So far as Is known, none of Roberts relatives or friends saw ths letter, but members of his family aver that ha re ceived such a missive recently snd that he spoke of Journeying to Jefferson to discuss the proposed deal with lis writer. He did not say from whom It waa from; perhaps he did not know. Letter Is Missing.. A search of Roberts' clothes after he succumbed, without regaining conscious ness, to bis assassin's bullet last night and of his effects hero today failed to reveal the letter. Mr. Roberta once lived at Marlon, not far from Jefferson, and was acquainted with many persona living in the vicin ity Inquiry today among residents of Jefferson, who might have put the busi ness proposition to Roberts, brought no results. Bert Robertson, cashier of the Jefferson Bank, said that no such letter was sent out from that institution and that ha knsw nothing of tha proposed transaction. The exsct amount of money wnlcn Roberts bad with him last night is an other thing which has not been deter mined. He had no deposlte at local banks and had not aecured any money from them recently, although a memor andum In bis pockets Indicated that be had obtained S7S00 not very long ago. It was his Invariable custom to carry around large sums, against the advlcs of his friends. In reply to criticisms. Mr Roberts wss wont to reply that he could alwaya drive a better bargain with cash. There were rumors here today that he had nearly 1.00 with him yeaterdsy. but this hss not been confirmed. He Is not thought to bavs carried more than S70C0: probably a . gum considerably smaller. Large Sum Secured. That Roberts' slayer secured a Urge sum is Indicated by the fact that over S10 was discarded by him In his flight snd he would unlikely have left behind much of tha pelf for which h took so much risk, svsn If stricken with fright. Beside the money found In Roberts torn satchel and on the seat of his carriage last night. 140 In gold was found In tha creek near the bridge this morning. This bridge Is a lonely place at .night. Men whistle and whip up their horses when they drive under Its gloomy shed after dusk and they breathe more freely when they have emergtd safely at the other end and have left the sombre tun nel m tbe dust behind. Bridge Steeped In Tragedy. The place Is steeped In tr axed T. for It ts said that Mr. Roberta was the sixth man to encounter sudden death under Its old-fashioned roof. The structure Is lo cated a quarter of-a mile from ths State Reform School and tha ground In ths Immediate vicinity Is covered with tangled brush and thickets, adding to Its desolation. Sheriff Mlnto and bis deputies are fol lowing up every clew that offera a solu tion of ths mystery snd hsve spread broadcast Instructions for officers of the law to dtain and question travel-worn, mud-bespattered persons who might pos siblr hare bail some connection with the affair. They have learned from an automobile party which passed over the bridge shortly befors the" killing tbst a wagon r Leading Furnishers of the Home, Hotel and Office ToM & Gibbs, Hoc, MORRISON AT SEVENTH Easiest Payment Terms to Homefurnishers Furniture of Character Made By BerKey & Gay. of Grand Rapids.
