Present Facilities) Ample for Busi ness aad City Would Have to Face Constant Deficit. Aa election day draws near oppo sition te the proposed bond Issue of SI.o00.000 for public docks is becoming more and more apparent. Many busi ness men. after closely studying the situation, have come to tha conclusion that at this time it would be a waste of money to build public docks. Their chief argument la that the great ma jority of the big importing and ex porting firms and corporationa own their docks, and for auch reason could not ba persuaded to handle their car goes over those which would be owned by the City of Portland. Speaking of tbe situation last night. W. J. Burns, manager for Balfour, Guthrie dc Co, said: "Any opinion that I would give on this question might appear to tha pub llo to be actuated by ulterior motives, but. speaking from a purely disinter ested standpoint and as one who knows something of the shipping situation. 1 will say that the necessity of provid ing public docks has never been ap parent to me. The facilities we bave are ample to care for the business, and the rates charged compare favorably with those charged in other Paclflo Coast aeaporu. "In my estimation, the future can take care of itself. Should the business of Portland grow to such proportion aa to necessitate public docks, they may be provided at any time. It is not necessary that they be massed in any particular portion of tha harbor or near the center of the city. The docka of London. England, extend for several miles along the Thames." M. P. Henderson, vice-president of the Eastern 4t Weatern Lumber Co said The docka which are here now are paying very meager returns to their owners. I do not believe that much in come Is assured public docka and I 7 V UffuuUiasvt At America's Largest Popular-Price Drugstore The Store where goods are marked at what they are worth, NOT at what we think they will bring.
