Discharge of Cargo to Start Today 2.500.000 Feet of Lumber to He Taken. tf-liins; for fif month under many adverse conditions, the British ship Claverdon arrived iate Saturday night from New rastle-on-the-Tyne. and the -ork of dischar-lna; her cargo of 309 ton of firebrick. rlsr Iron and cement. it Is expected, wlil begin at once. is expected that the Claverdon will load m-lth about I.SO'l.OOO feet of lumber lor Foutli Africa. I'nder proper conditions the Claver don should have arrived here In ll'l days, hut after passing around Cape Jlorn she met detaining winds aKainst which she was forced to fisht her way very slowly. The Claverdon carries 33 men. Including- elgrht apprentices who have never before been on this side of the world. There were no ckness or death on the lonK Journey, but the mn suffered Intensely with cold while ratlins- throuch the wintry seas of the southern hemisphere in June. lor Cover Peek. rrevlous to reaching Cape Horn the slip encountered a heavy Kale, in which she lost some of her canvas. The flvlns; spray froxe into Ice on the r'-Sinjr and a sheet of Ice several time covered the main deck, causing the crew much difficulty In moving over it. There was a shortage of coal. and. with the thermometer dropping below zero. It was necessary 'or the men to keep eerlslng to prevent freezing. After emerging from the gale near the cape, the Claverdon sighted a four masted American ship with-her canvas g.me but It was not possible to make out her name. The ship seemed to he seaworthy, and It Is not believed that she was lost. " Among the few Incidents that broke the monotony of the long Journey were the capturing of two sharks, one on the Atlantic Ocean and the ether on the I.rlfk. They were 10 and 11 feet long respectively, and were caught with hooks baited with bacon. Shark Spine Korm Canes. From the backbones of the sharks the sailors hare made canes, the vertebrae in each c.w being held to gether by running an Iron nd through them. Owing to fog the Claverdon was forced to He outside th. Columbia l;lver bar for three days, and while drifting thus awaiting for entrance the ship narrowly escaped running Into the breakers. It was Impossible to make observa tions in the fog. and It was only the sound of the breakers that warned the rrew of the Claverdon of their dan ger Still they were helpless, ae there was" no wind, and for a time it seemed almost certain that the ship would go ashore. The ship was red by a licht breese that ---p Thorrta- morn ing and enabled her t- get hack toward the lightship. She was picked up that evening by a tug. and the Oklahoma was on hand the following day to start wl'h her for Portland. The) Claverdon H commanded bv Captain John Wilson, who Is making Ms first vovage in her. The vessel was last In Portland In 190". when she took from here a cargo of grain.
