40,000 SEE PARADE
Vancouver Is Royal Host on
Fourth of July.

VANCOUVER, Wash.. July 4. (Spe
cial.) Never beXtre In the history of
Vancouver was the Fourth of July cele
bration as great a success as the one
held today. It Is estimated that nearly
40,000 persons were In the city, but
tvlth all this crowd, there was not a
serious accident. . '
In the morninfr, a monster parade.
In which over 1000 persons took; part,
was held. The First Infantry Band and
the Vancouver city band furnished
music. All of the soldiers in the post
were in line with their guns, and the
Second Field Artillery with its moun
tain batteries took part.
The prlza for the largest marching
tody was awarded to the Spanish
American "War Veterans, who had 86
in line. The Elks, wearing linen dus
ters and small hats, much resembling
fried eggs straight up, were 6o strong.
The best woman's mount was won by
Miss Avan; the M. R. Sparks automo
bile with a number of girls won the
prize for the best decorated machine,
E. G. Crawford second, and William Du
Bo la third.
The United Artisans had the best
float and the B. & M. Grooery took
first prize for the best business float;
the Central Manufacturing Company
second, and Kong Loy, a Chinese gar
dener, third. The best double drivers
were owned and driven by Charles Mc
Cafferty Miss Ie Yarmon led the
best Jersey cow, and Rector & Daly
won the four-horse team prizes. The
neatest dressed newsboy was Leslie
.Vance, 7 years old.
The judges of the parade were Mrs.
Ieo McGuire, Mrs. F. S. Palmer, M. M.
Connor, Del Hildreth, and N. W. Merrl
Cield. The Grand Army veterans and the
Women's Relief Corps took prominent
parts in the parade.
Following the parade. Senator Wil
Bon of Seattle delivered an eloquent ad
dress to a large audience in the city
park, and his remarks were punctu
ated at Intervals by explosions of fire
crackers. The general committee was: J. J.
Padden. president; William N. Marshall,
secretary ; M. S. Cohen, treasurer, W.
ft. Carter,, C. C. Turley. Thomas P.
Clarke. C. D. Hayes, A. W. Oalder, F.

In the afternoon the motorboat races,
tinder the auspices of the Vancouver
3Tacht Club and the Portland Motorboat
Club, occupied the time.
About 4 o'clock a Portland automo
fclllst on the ferry slip attempted to
crank his machine and the brake did
Hot hold it when the engine started.
The machine dashed down the incline
through a large crowd of people and
narrowly missed injuring a number.
Officer Adams, 6 feet and 5 inches tall,
attempted to hold the machine, but
was crowded against the side of the
embankment and his legs were serious
ly bruised.
Guy Bennett, a member of the Van
couver Yacht Club, was starting from
the bank to the Judge's scow In the
Columbia when Henry Bird, a Vancou
ver Jeweler, jumped Into the boat and
upset them both. The day was warm
and the water wet, and the thousands
looking on enjoyed a good laugh on the
couple as they splashed around In the
water, but they were not injured.
BIG CROWB-S THRONG KUGEXK
Celebration Is Best One in History
of Lane County Town.
EUGENE, Or., July " 4. (Special.) In
point of attendance and interest, Eugene
has had one of the best celebrations in
its history- The programme for the
day Included a good parade, consisting
largely of floats and decorated automo
biles and carriages. The oration was de
livered by O. P. Coshow and the Declara
tion was read by Professor Joseph Schae
fer. Daylight fireworks were a new feature
of the celebration. A fair crowd attend
ed the sports and races at the fair
grounds this afternoon, but hundreds re
mained downtown to get the report of the
fight.
In Eugene were scores of men who
have met Jeffries, and when the flash
"was read that Johnson had won, the dis
appointed crowd dispersed without a
cheer for, the victor. The contest was
bulletined by both the Guard and Regis
ter. Order was almost perfect in spite of
Ihe large crowds, and only one arrest
twas made.
CHEIIAXIS HAS BIG CROWD
Cane Fourth Is Celebrated With. Old
Time Enthusiasm. "
CHEHALIS, Wash., July 4. (Special.)
Chehalis observed the Fourth of July
with one of the biggest celebrations in
the history of the city. There was a
parade at 11 o'clock, followed by a
patriotic programme at the Glide, where
General J. M. Ash ton, of Taooma, was
the orator of the day.
The Chehalis band appeared in new
Uniforms, and the State Training School
band also furnished music. Many
'decorated autos were in the parade.
Following the noon hour there were
Bports of all kinds on .the streets.
The baseball game at Millett Field,
at 3:30. attracted a crowd that taxed
the capacity of the great' grandstand.
At night there were dances, moving
picture shows, street vaudeville and
other amusements. The city ordinances
prohibiting the firing of explosives' of
all kinds, including firecrackers, was
enforced.
AliRAXY'S CROWD IS '20,000
X-lnn County's Metropolis Holds
Monster Celebration.
ALBANY, Or., July 4. (Special.)
Twenty thousand people celebrated the
Nation's birthday in Albany today in
one of the biggest celebrations ' ever
held in the Willamette Valley. Big
crowds came from all nearby towns,
and from all parts of the surrounding
country.
The parade this forenoon was by far
the best ever seen here. Scores of
decorated automobiles and numerous
floats were the leading features'. Fol
lowing the parade a patriotic pro
gramme was held In Chautuaqua Park
Uercy R. Kelly, of Albany, was orator
the day, and delivered a eplendid
oration. The afternoon was devoted to
baseball games, races and athletic
sports. The principal contest was an
old-fashioned horse race. The Cor
vallls fire department won from the
Albany fire department in this event,
the Corvallis team running two blocks
and getting water in 31 seconds, de
feating Albany by four seconds.
The celebration closed tonight with a
grand display of fireworks. The Al-bany-Corvallis
and Shedda bands fur
nished music for the celebration. No
accidents marred the day.

Fourth Celebration Claims Victims
Before Day Dawns.
SEATTLE, July 4. Before the dawn
of Independence day three people had
suffered serious injuries in Fourth of
July accidents in Seattle. One of these.
John Vant, aged 15. will probably lose
the sight of his right eye as the result
of Injuries sustained when a cracker
which had failed to explode blew up in
his hand, burning his face.
Ephralm Charland, aged 16, was the
victim of a "dldn't-know-it-was-load-ed"
accident. His chum, 17-year-old
Elmer Elliott, played Tracy, the ban
dit, and Charland failed to throw up his
hands.- He received a .32-caliber revol
ver bullet in the side of his head. Phy
sicians say the wound Is not dangerous.
Augustus Boffles, 19 years old, was
taken to the city hospital last night
with a badly mangled hand, injured
when a giant cracker exploded prema
turely. The hand can be saved.
ROSEBCRG HONORS FOURTH

spices of W C. T. U.
ROSEBURG, Or., July 4.-(Speeial.
Independence day was general'y observed
in this city, with a grand celebration at
the fair grounds under the auspices of
the W. C. T. U. of Douglas County. The
weather was ideal. Promptly at 10 o'clock
in the morning occurred the parade, in
which were displayed numerous floats,
both of humorous and artistic design;
members of the various fraternal orders,
members of the Roseburg Sunday schools
and individuals.
The Fourth of July oration was deliv
ered by W. E. Critchlow, of Portland.
The afternoon programme included foot,
sack races and egg races, catching the
srreased pig. dog races and a target shoot.
In which several local marksmen of
prominence participated.
Xewberg Has Big Celebration. .
NEWBERG, Or., July 4. (Special.)
Independence Day was celebrated in
Newberg by a crowd estimated at from
6000 to 10,000 people. At 10 A. M. there
was a parade made up of 75 floats,
many of pretty design, representing
the varied business Interests of tKe
city. Hon. D. S. Mulkey, of Jackson
ville, was the orator of the day. In
the afternoon a baseball game was
played between the St. Paul and
Columbia Hardware Company teams,
the former team winning, 4-0. Fire
works were displayed at night.
Fort Band Appears.
FORT STEVENS, Or., July 4. (Spe
cial.) Today at noon the Fort Stevens
military band appeared for the first
time in a public recital. This is the cul
mination of months of patient effort on
the part of Sergeant Hayward and Mr.
Utzinger, the Instructors. Amid the roar
of saluting cannon and the flash of
gleaming weapons the Fort Stevens band
contributed its part in the salute to the
Nation, a ceremony that takes place an
nually as the sun reaches its zenith, on
the fourth day of July.
10,000 Attend Celebration.
MOSCOW, Idaho, July 4. (Special.)
The attendance, parade, amusements and
business at today's celebration exceeded
all former celebrations held by this city.
The attendance was estimated at 10,000.

was unique In that he was a native of
England, and a naturalized American
His discussion from the Englishman's
plde of the issue of the Revolutionary
War was a pleasing innovation.
Colfax Boy Loses Fingers. .
COLFAX, Wash., July 4. Max Berry,
the 16-year-old son of L. P. Berry, of
Colfax, who was saved from drowning
in the Palouse River several days ago
by heroic efforts of friends, today came
near meeting death by the explosion of
a dynamite cap from a short fuse, los
ing the first two fingers of his hand and
the thumb. He had planned to frighten
his' parents at 4 A. M., having found
the dynamite caps in an old building.
Elgin Has Last Xolsy Fourth.
ELGIN. Or., July 4. (Special.) El
gin today had its last noisy Fourth, as
an ordinance against firecrackers and
torpedoes is ready for the Mayor's
signature, which has been delayed
until July 6 on account of the differ
ent merchants already having their
stocks of noise-making explosives pur
chased. .
Xo Celebration, at Astoria.
ASTORIA, Or., July 4. (Special.)
There was no general observance of
the Fourth here other than that the
stores were closed and business was
suspended for the day. Large crowds
of citizens spent the day at the beaches
or at neighboring towns where cele
brations were held.

George Fryor, a pioneer resident of
Douglas County, was found dead in the
Conklin rooming-house In this city
'shortly after 7 o'clock this morning. He
wan 65 years of age and was apparently
In good health when he retired last night.
He is survived by one sister, Kllen Mc
Devitt, of Salem, and one brother. Prank
McDevitt, a newspaper man of Sumpter.
The body is being held awaiting Instruc
tions from relatives.
