LARGER RETURNSPOSS1BLE
Southern Pacific Provides South
ward Cargo Through Big Pnr-
1 chase of Ties, and Portland
i
Buys 10,000 Tons Cement.
What is taken as an Indication that
the death knell of the oldtime sailing
vessel Is about to be sounded, when
they are relegated from the regular
coastwise trade on the Pacific, is- the
announcement that the firm of Olsen &
Mahony, of San Francisco, Is Inter
ested In the Ocean Barge & Tugboat
Company and will operate. the sailing
schooners Andy Mahony, Sea Home
and Oliver J. Olson in conjunction with
the barks Gerard C. Tobey and Annie
Turner, towing two schooners at a
time between Portland and San Fran
cisco. In that connection it was also made
known yesterday by V. J. Woodside,
president of the corporation, that con
tracts have been entered into by the
Southern Pacific for 20.000.000 feet of
fir ties to be transported to the Bay
City and Pan Pedro, and that the Ocean
Barge & Tugboat Company has entered
Into an agreement to transport 8,000,000
feet of them from Columbia River
points to the Golden Gate.
Northward the schooners and con
Verted barks will carry cement and as
phalt, and, as the demand for Califor
nia cement has rapidly grown until the
deliveries by water each month have
reached 10,000 tons, the company's ex
ecutives feel that they are assured of
continuous' business for at least two
years. The tie contract was closed by
Charles McCormick. of San Francisco,
and the delivery of 8.000,000 feet is to
fce made in four months.
The old bark Tobey will complete
discharging cement at Supple's dock
tonight and is to take on 1,000.000 feet
of ties at Rainier, St. Helens and other
Columbia River points. The Amie Tur
ner is held at the Bay City and will not
be started north until the Tobey is
loaded. When the three schooners are
placed in service, a regular, schedule
will be arrtinged. The barks were pur
chased outright ly the Ocean Barge &
Tugboat Company, and Captain AV. J.
MacLeod, of the Tobey, is a heavy
stockholder. The Tobey has a capacity
of ' 1.000,000 feet of lumber and the
.Turner about oOO.OOO feet.
Charles Nelson, a carpenter employed
ifcy Joseph Supple, found an old friend
Xsterday in the Tobey, as he shipped
as carpenter on her over 20 years ago
and assisted in her repairs when she
was collided with and sank in New
"York harbor. Another who knows her
well is Captain Blain, of the Oregon
drydock, who was mate on her 13 years
ago. Hie Tobey and Turner were in
the Hawaiian Island sugar trade for
years and as they were relegated when
steamers were pressed into that serv
ice, as the latter are now given prece
dence In the lumber trade, they were
placed on the market.

Vpper Willamette Finds Itself in
Xeed of Transportation.
In the- face of prospects that do not
augur speedy relief for growers on the
Upper Willamette between Newberg
and Salem, impetus has been given to
a movement for the chartering of an
Independent steamer of light draft to
ply on the river until the Government
renews its operations on the channel
end thereby provides a road of suffi
cient depth for the movement of the
Oregon City Transportation Company's
fleet.
It was reported yesterday that Cap
tain Chllcott and others living between
Newberg, the present head of naviga
tion, and Wheatland, were negotiating
to secure the steamer Etna, now plying
on Lewis River. She is of light draft
and of a small capacity, approximating
about 10 tons deadweight.- The grow
ers are somewhat isolated from the rail
lines, and If the Southern Pacific is
patronized it means a heavy haul, or
If traffic is diverted to the Oregon
Klectrie, the teams must ferry across
the Willamette.

TACOMA, June 10. Judge John A.
Shackleford, of the Superior Court,
handed down an opinion this afternoon,
holding the settlement ordinance with
the Tacoma Railway & Power Company,
made under the Campbell administration
some years ago, is valid, and that 5
cents must be the fare anywhere within
the city limits, and that when the city
limits are extended the 5-cent fare goes
with it.
This is a victory for the Fern Hill
residents who have been contending for
a 6-cent fare since the annexation to
the city last November.

AH world records for lumber cargoes

for the Far East, for she has stowed in
her hold and on deck a total of 5,023,000

1,000,000 feet the biggest load carried out
of this port previously.
The desire to give the Knight of the

charterers in clearir.g her early yesterday
through the Cu3tom-House and her mani

but the Eastern & Western mill, which
supplied the material, estimated the total
later at the amount mentioned.
Captain C. X. Flnnis. her master, has
arranged for the Port of Portland to
have a steamer alongside soon after 5
o'clock this morning and with Pilot Harry
Eknpkin on the bridge she will swing into
the stream drawing 25 feet of water. At
Astoria she will be met soon as she

Nature In her wisdom and beneficence has provided, In her great vegetable
kingdom, a cure for most of the ills and ailments of humanity. Work and study
have perfected the compounding of these botanical medicines and placed them at
our disposal. We rely on them first because of their ability in curing disease,
snd next because we can use them with the confidence that such remedies do not
injure the system as do the strong mineral concoctions. Among the very best of
these botanical preparations is S. S. S.. a medicine made entirely of roots, herba
and barks in such combination as to make it the greatest of all blood purifiers
and safest of all tonics. It does not contain the least particle of harmful
mineral to injuriously affect any of the delicate parts of the system. 8. S. 3.
cures Rheumatism, Catarrh, Sores and Ulcers, Scrofula, Malaria, Skin Diseases;
Contagious Blood Poison, or any blood affection or disease even reaching down
and cleansing the circulation of all inherited blood troubles. As a tonic S S S
is unequaled. It builds up the system in the proper way, by purifying the blood
and supplying a sufficient amount of vigor and nourishment to the body. If yon
are suffering with any blood trouble, or are in any way run-down in health, you
could not do better than take S. S. S. a purely botanical blood remedy. It cures
without ever leaving any unpleasant or injurious effects. It is perfectly safe for
young or old. Book on the blood free to all who write.

A PHYSICIAN'S SUCCESS
may reasonably be judged by a crowded waiting-room. You know I have
been in the same location for many years, still everv dav in the week
my offices are thronged with the sick and afflicted, availing themselves
of the liberal low fee rate extended to the public bv this eminent spe
cialist. Why Is this so? Simply because my reputation for cures has
stood the test of years. There are no extra fees for complicated cases.
1 ou may have one or a dozen ailments the price is the same. I have a
special treatment for each ailment I treat. A patient remarked in my
reception parlors: "Doctor, I do not see how you can give such thorough
and painstaking treatment and devote so much care and attention to
each patient for such a very low fee." I replied: "My profit lies in the
large number I cure every year."
Many cases accepted for less than 10 now.

I do not care what your experience has been with other treatments,
what guarantees you have, and what promises were unfulfilled in the
past as unsuccessful, unscientific treatment and unreliable concerns
are in no way a reflection upon honest, trustworthy business methods
lived up to by me for twenty-five years. I have an established repu
tation and my guarantee' means that my patients are indisputably in
sured of success in their cape. There is all the difference in the
world between a guarantee of this kind and the promises of those
mushroom concerns which are continually failing in business. I repeat
my straightforward, square proposition to wait for my fee until the
cure is effected.
I not only thoroughly, cure my patients,
but I am usually able to effect a cure in less
than half the time most physicians require to
produce even partial results. Were I lacking
in knowledge pertaining to my specialty I
wouhi never have attained my present suc
cess, nor would I today be recognized as. the
leading specialist treating men's ailments. I
ask you to call at my office and talk with me
about your case. Examination and consulta
tion will cost you nothing, and I will explain
to you my methods of curing.
Varicose Veins, Contracted Ailments,
Files and Specific Blood Poison, I treat and
never fail to effect a cure.
My Cures Are Thorough and
I WILL WAIT FOR MY FEE
