Supervisor Beach Has Call for Many
Blanks Which Will Be Prepared
for Census-Takers.
Uncle Sam wlil . begin' counting the
people of Portland tomorrow morn
ing, and It is Just as well for each
man, woman and child to be cheer
fully prepared to answer a large num
ber of more or less Impertinent ques
tions as to age, occupation, color and
kind of hair worn with this season's
ntyles, the number of times you have
been married and why.
Watchdogs and burglar alarms will
be of no avail in keeping out the in
vader, because the dignity of an act
of Congress is behind the man wearing
the badge. Besides all that, there is
& firm resolve on the part of the busi
ness people of the city to see to it
that every person from Scow Town to
Portland Heights and Mount Tabor is
accounted for.
With the first streak of dawn, 127
well-dresed young men will be turned
loose by Supervisor Beach. Most of
them are young men of pleasing ap
pearance who are conceded to have the
advantage of being able to extract in
formation with the least possible pain
to the patient.
Supervisor Beach has no qualms about
the enumeration of the growth of
Portland beginning Friday. He has
Investigated the history of the state
and ascertained that about every big
event which has been to the credit of
Oregon oegan on Friday, even his own
eventful career.
An allotment of funds for the em
ployment of a number of interpreters
was yesterday received from the Wash
. lngton office. The men will be largely
used in the Italian, Chinese and Jap
anese quarters, and will be paid $6 a
day for the work.
Supervisor Beach passed yesterday
at Astoria in an endeavor to straighten
out the tangle of instructions which
his assistants do not understand. The
men were confused as to the districts
in which they were to work, how to
handle certain elements and would
have been unable to do justice to the
lower river city had Mr. Beach not
taken the time to pay them a second
Visit.
Hundreds of people called at the of
fice of the Census Bureau yesterday
to secure individual blanks which may
be filled out and left at their places
of residence to be taken up by the
enumerators, or mailed to the office
of the supervisor in a franked envelope
which is also furnished.
Kupene Enumerators Instructed.
KUGENE, Or., April 13. (Special.)
CV-nsus Supervisor R. J. Hendricks, of
Salem, conferred this afternoon at the
Commercial Club room with 20 of the
census enumerators for Lane County
and gave out final instructions for the
prosecution of the work which will be
gin Friday. The promotion department
of the Commercial Club Is also lending
support in taking the census and has
Issued a circular to the public to ex
pedite the work.

GRKSHAM. Or., April 13. (Special.)
