THE MORXIXG OREGOMAX, FRIDAY, ArRIL 1. 1910.
HIGH MARK IS SET
Heavy Increase Is Shown in
Export Lumber Trade.
COASTING BUSINESS LARGE
fc'orelffn Shipments Amount to 15,
015,823 Feet and California
Shipments Bring Total l"p to
28,170,823 Feot for March.
"While the foreign exports of lum
ber from Portland fell short of those
of February by more than 3,500,000
feet, the total amount set afloat for the
month of March beat the figures of
the preceding month by 1.135.289 feet,
letting a high mark for total exports
of timber. The total exports for the
months were J8.170.S23 feet, as com
pared with 27,035,534 feet for Feb
ruary. The great increase was in the coast
wise shipments. California dealers
(drew on Portland for 13.155,000 feet
during the month. This is the heav
iest shipment for a single month since
the big rush following the fire and
earthquake in San Francisco in April,
1906.
Grain shipments from Portland- for
JIarch, foreign, consisted of 146.642
bushels of wheat and 15,536 barrels of
flour. The wheat was valued at $149,
301 and the flour at $70,214, making a
total of $219,515. California shipments
for the month Amounted to 293,271
bushels of wheat and 31,520 barrels of
flour, according to figures compiled by
the Merchants Exchange.
Foreign shipments of wheat from
Puget Sound ports were a trifle in
excess of those dispatched from Port
land, but the California shipments
brought the total exports from Port
land to a figure in excess of those from
the Sound cities. Flour shipments from
the Sound were in excess of those from
Portland.
As compared with the corresponding
month last year, Portland fell well
short in exports of both wheat and
flour. In spite of the slump in the
export trade, the Merchants Exchange
figures show a grand total of exports
of the season to date from the North
west of 21.476.617 bushels. This is less
than 2.000.000 bushels short of the
season preceding. In the grain history
t the Northwest the heaviest season
was that of 1907-8. when the total ex
ports to April 1 totaled 37.608,575 bush
els. One vessel Is now loading wheat at
Portland for the United Kingdom and
two others (spot ships) are under char
ter. It Is reported that there is still
considerable grain for export in the
Morthwest and the season will wind up
with a good showing. Charters for
new crop grain are still slow, but dur
ing the coming month a large number
will probably be taken.

approval. This announcement was made
by J. M. Hannaford. second vice-president
of the Northern Pacific, who ar
rived in Portland yesterday. Mr. Han
naford will depart this morning for
his home in St. Paul.
The visiting railroad official spoke
highly of the advantages accruing to
this part of the country through the
construction of the North Bank road.
He declared that it was not entirly due
to the fact that the North Bank is on
a water grade that it is desired to
send Northern Pacific freight from Ta
coma and points south over that road,
but partially because of congestion of
freight on the Sound, which must be
relieved in this way. Mr. Hannaford
said, however, that if the roads run
ning east from Seattle had a water
grade there would be no congestion of
freight on the Sound.
The present traffic agreement be
tween the two roads is limited to Cen
tralia and the district south of that
place, which at present is sending a
large amount of freight daily by way
of the North Bank road. The new sched
ule, however, will increase the freight
to be sent by way of the North Bank
road materially.
Although Mr. Hannaford came to
Portland yesterday by way of Seattle
and Tacoma. he diil not stop or? to in
spect the work being done in the way
of double-tracking the road between
this city and the Sound. When asked
how soon the work of double-tracking
the road would be completed, he re
plied hat he did not know.
"If you had asked me that question
last year," he replied, "I would have
said that it would be completed some
time during this Summer, but I am not
sure about it now."

GEARHART PARK IS SOLD
Theodore Kruse Confirms Transfer.
Hill Buys, Is One Rumor.
Reports of the sale by Theodore
Kruse of his Gearhart Park property
on Clatsop Beach were confirmed yes
terday by Mr. Kruse at Astoria, where
he was seen on his way to Ocean
Beach. The price paid was not told,
but Mr. Kruse said recently that the
property was on the market for $250,
000. The property comprises ' about 800
acres of resort land, and includes a
dairy farm, the old Gearhart Hotel
and a hotel not completed, which haa
cost 176,000. The Title & Trust Com
pany has taken the deed as a holding
agent and the name of the real buyer
is not announced. Mr. Kruse said that
he did not know himself who the real
principals were.
Two stories are current. In Astoria
it is believed that a syndicate headed
by Thomas L. Greenough, of Missoula,
Mont., made the purchase, with a view
of completing the hotel and making
other extensive improvements, it was
said in Portland yesterday that the
Ruth Trust Company was concerned in
the sale and that accounted for the
rumor that J. J. Hill railroad interests
were behind the purchase.
The Hill interests bought the Ruth
Trust Company, together with the
United Railways, a few months ago
and this connection of the companies
gave added force to the story. It was
said that Mr. Hill might have desired
the property to avoid moving the As
toria & Columbia River tracks toward
the beach in competition with the elec
tric road.

praise to this great medicinal whiskey. In his recent let
