K. C. McAllister States One of Prin
cipal Reasons for Decreased Pack
Iat Year Was Shortening of
Season toy Legislature.
SALBM, Or.. Feb. 4. (SrwclaJ.). In the
annual report of Master Fish "Warden H.
C. McAllister to the State Board of Fish
Commissioners, a detailed statement is
onade of the fish product of Oregon
erea3ia for 3909: From the Owegon side
of the Columbia River were taken 12.
473,731 pounds of Chinook salmon, 1,551.434
pounds of bluebark salmon, .2,153,155
pounds of steelhead salmon, 1.426.877
pounds of silvvslde salmon. 152,740 pounds
of chums. 101.541 pounds of sturgeon, 374.
666 pounds shad. The pack of ohinook,
steelhead, sturgeon and shad shows a
small decrease over 1908, but the bluebark
salmon shows an increase of 400,000
pounds over 1908.
This year the combined pack of chi
nooks, bluebacks, steel heads and silver
sides on the Orefton side of the river
amounted to 17.604.W7 pounds, ft decrease
of JCK.54 pounds over 190S. The report
of the Klsh AVarden states that one of
the principal reasons for the decreased
pack this year was the shortening of the
open season by the Legislature. .
Table Shows Catch.
The Fish Warden compiled the follow
ing table, showing the entire product in
pounds of the Columbia River, both sides,
for the year 1909:

It Is declared that " the new protective
laws are just what was needed to build
up the salmon industry of the Columbia
to its former high standard.
The "Warden continues: "I sincerely
hope that these laws will be allowed to
remain in fores for at least four or five
years so that the results of their opera
tion can be thoroughly tested."
Mention is made of the employment of
three men to shoot sealions and seals at
the mouth of Elk creek and the Columbia
River. A total of 2S8 seals and 6T0 sea
lions were killed at an expense of 1945.47,
including guns and equipment.
Rivers Well Supplied.
. From all sources there were released,
and tributaries during 190O. a total of 39.
127.750 salmon fry. In addition to the
above there, were liberated by the
United States Bureau of Fisheries 1.330.000
shad fry in the Willamette and Clacka
mas Rivers.
'lteniflHlng the building o the Central
Hatchery at Bonneville, "Warden Mc
Allister says:
"1 am firmly convinced that the cre
ation of the iBonneville hatchery is the
best work this department has ever done
and is a step in the right direction."
The. cost of the Central Hatchery was
about 16,000. Detailed statements' of the
cost of operating the various hatcheries
in the state are given. Arrangements
have been made for the bulldlnl? of a
permanent hatchery on the Coquille
River.
Th Warden believes that lt is a Shame
that this groat State of Oregon does not
provide for the propogatlon of trout."
and suggests that since the erection of
a central hatchery some of the salmon
hatcheries might be used for hatching
trout spawn without injury to the salmon
industry.
CHINESE BOYCOTT BAY CITY
Prefer Conveniences of Sound Ports
for Entry Into C S.
.
SEATTLE, Wash.. Feb. 4. Relative to
the decision of the Pacific Coast Chinese
to divert passenger traffic from San
Francisco to Buget Sound ports, Seattle
Chinese explained today that the com
plaint is not against the officials of the
Immigration Service, but against the
location of the immigrant station at
Angel Island, so far from San Francisco
that a 45-minute ride in a Government
launch is necessary.
Rather than undergo the suffering
and delay of going to Angel Island,
the Chinese have decided to patron
ize the northern ports. The United
states has lust abolished the system
which permitted entry of Chinese at
Canadian border points and at Vic-
torla and Vancouver. Boston and
Seattle, therefore, will be the chief
ports of entry for Chinese into the
northern United States.
