MORE CARS ON BROADWAY
Faster Schedule to Be Given During
Rush Hours Irving-ton. Line Is
Also to Be Better Best of
Feeling Is Apparent.
Members of thft Irvlnrton-Holladay ex
ecutive commute held a two hours' con
ference, yesterday afternoon with rresl
rtorwt Josselyn. of the Portland Railway.
IJKht A Power Company, on the subject
of improved car aervlce for the Irvln--on-Holladay
district. The result of the
conference was satisfactory both to the
members of the committee and to Mr.
JosBelyn.
The latter explained to the committee
the improvements already made In the car
forvice In the two districts, the plans of
tlio company for improved service In the
future, and also gave orders' to the
operating service for immediate changes
that will remedy the conditions which the
committee urged should be Improved.
The service on the Broadway line is to
be altered In several particulars im
mediately. From 7:45 A. M. to 8:30 A. M..
the mom-Ins- rush hours, a seven and one
half minute service will be' maintained.
From 8:30 A. M. to 1 P. M. the service
will be 15 minutes, as at present. From
1 to 4 P. M. the schedule will be changed
from a 15-minute to a 124-minute serv
ice. From 4 to 7:30 P. M. cars will he
run on a service varying between six
and seven minutes, during these rush
hours, and -with greater frequency if the
traffic is found to require it.
Irvlngton Line to Be Changed.
President Josselyn announced that the
work of double tracking the Irvington
line, which had been held up until recent
ly by litigation over the paving of Mult
nomah street, would be started as soon
as weather conditions would permit. He
also suggested to the operating depart
ment that the curve at Fifteenth and
Multnomah streets, where there are fre
quent derailments, be immediately re
paired. At the suggestion of Mr. Wood
ward, a member of the committee, he
also ordered the operating department to
use the switch on Fifteenth street In
stead of the one on East Ninth and Mult
nomah after 4:30 P. M., so that the
crowded outgoing cars would not be de
layed at that point.
Mr. Josselyn also announced that the
Irvlngton line would be continued out
Fifteenth as far as Siskiyou street. The
line on Tillamook, from Fifteenth to Nine
teenth will then be discontinued.
The needs of the Holla-Jay district,
which has been Inconvenienced since the
Broadway cars have beerf taken oft Nine
teenth street, will be met by a new line
which will serve the Holladay district
and run across the East Twenty-eighth-street
bridge.
Good Feeling; Prevails.
Mayor Simon accompanied the members
of the committee to the conference, which
he opened by urging President Josselyn
to do whatever was in his power to give
Improved service to the district. A gen
eral discussion then followed in which the
members of the committee II. M. Haller,
H. J. Jaegeri D. I Povey. W. F. Wood
ward. B. F. Irvine, Fred Johnston, O. C.
Tetter. J. Woods Smith, C. V. Cooper and
W. J. Hofmann. set forth some of the
Inoonveniences of the street railway's
patrons. President Josselyn. Vice-President
Fuller. General Superintendent
Franklin and Superintendent Cooper out
lined the difficulties of giving regular
service on account of the bridge delays,
and of maintaining scliedulee during the
rush hours. The best of feeling was
manifested during the conference, which
ended in the feeling that a better un
derstanding had been reached with the
street railway officials.
BCWYSIDE HAS COMPLAINT
President Josselyn Is Asked for Bet
ter Service.
The Sunnyaide Push Club Wednesday
night discussed the car service on Bel
mont street. It was decided not to
Join, in any drastic criticism of the car
company, but to. lay before President
Josselyn some suggestions for his con
sideration. The club also decided to
ask the company to restore the former
route of the Sunnyslde cars on Morri
son street to Eleventh, which has been
done. Secretary S. W. Walker prepared
and submitted to Mr. Josselyn the fol
lowing statement and suggestions:
"The Bolmont-street line, running- di
rect from the business districts of the
West Side to and through the most
central and densely populated resi
dential and business districts of the
Fast Side, we consider one of your
most important lines. We realize the
delays and inconveniences caused by
the frequent openings' of the Morrison
bridge draw and by other interruptions,
over- -which you can have no control,
rhlch produce irregularities in the car
ervicc, and that it would be inap
propriate to criticise such matters here.
We believe that you are trying to
operate this line in a manner con
sistent with Its importance and wish
to commend the efforts yon have made
to maintain a satisfactory service.
. Taking into consideration the element
of interdependence between your com
pany and all its patrons residing be
yond walking distance limits and plac
ing ourselves as nearly as possible in
your position, we wish to make some
suggestions which we believe are in
the line of mutual benefits to your
company and to your Sunnyslde pat
rons." The statement begins with a request
that the Sunnyslde cars be rerouted
on Morrison to Eleventh street, which
has been done. The following: are the
other suggestions:
"Fli-M There Is an overcrowding of east
bound Mount Tabor cars from 11:30 A. M till
tt noon, caused by patrons who go home to
luncheon. It would be an Improvement In
eervlce If you would stair the tripper -service
early enouRh to relieve this condition, and we
relieve that more would take lunch at home
if they could rkle with lees inconvenience.
Peoond Some oomplalnt is made that -The
tripper service is discontinued too early In the
evening, causing overcrowding- on westbound
Mmint Tabor cars. We would request that you
Investigate this matter and. If your trip re
ports show the corn-plaint to be well founded,
we ask you to extend the trlppper service to
cover the overcrowded period.
Third Referring to matters contained In an
interview recently published In two daily pa
pens, we would direct your attention, to the
fact that the present population of this city
is made up principally of recent arrivals from
the rigid climes of this and other lands. Who
are acclimated to low temperatures In at
mospheres drier than ours and that they have
ss much difficulty In res'etins; the penetrating
and the enervating- character of our damp
cold as have those of longer resldenoa here,
and that the cry for heated cars arises more
largely from the recent arrivals than from
the old residents of the Northwest, and disre
garding the origin of the clamor, we believe
that heated can on all the longer runs are a

nece-Mvrlty for comfortable service. We do
not believe that you -seriously consider the
plan to discontinue all service across- the
bridges. We would look upon such an. ar
rangement as nothing less than a calamity to
the entire city. While It would doubtless
benefit the business districts of the East Side,
w have no wih to profit locally from a service
eo disadvantageous to the city at large.
Tn conclusion w would say that the fore
going suggestions and comments are not made
in a spirit of criticism, but rather they are
the earnest expression of our ideas as to the
betterments which we believe would benefit
your patrons, on the principle that the better
the service the greater the revenue you would
add to the profits of your company.
KONO CLUB IS ORGANIZED
McMlnnvllle Commercial Body
Changes Name, for Reasons.'
M'MINNVILLE. Or.. Dec. 10. (Spe
cial.) At an informal meeting of the
McMinnville Commercial Club last
evening a constitutional amendment
was decided upon which will change
the name of the organization to the
"Kono Club." In Esperanto, the new
world language, the word kono means
"get acquainted," and this, the only
Kono Club in Oregon, will have for its
mission the bringing together of
Btrangers and making good "Kononi
ans" of them.
The change in the name of the club
vas adopted so that there might be no
11 tangling features between the
b i08ters' auxiliary to the Commercial
C.-tib and the purely social organisation
of that name.

WEATHER CONDITIONS.
The pressure has increased rapidly over
the western portion of the country, the most
decided change taking place in the extreme
Northwest. The storm which has been for
several days off the Oregon-Washington
Coast has been forced northward by an
area of high pressure that was noted last
evenlnc approaching the California Coast
and is now overlying Eastern Oregon and
Western Idaho. This atmospheric move
ment has resulted in slightly cooler weather
in the Inter-Mountain region, and in light
