Forward Hold,
SAJf FRANCISCO. Nov. . Speelal.
Crawling along at a snail's pace through
the denae fog off the Cliff House this
morning, the blk tanker Catania, under
charter to the Associated OH Company,
and In command of Captain Canty, was
caught in the treacherous eddies and car
ried upon the Seal Rocks. She hit one
of the reefs with a crash that struck
terror to the hearts of her crew and sent
them scurrying ahout the decks.
The skipper maintained a cool head,
however, and immediately signaled to
reverse engines. Some moments later,
and unassisted, the Catania, although
leaking badly, backed into deep water,
and resumed her way. She arrived in
the harbor shortly after noon and the
news of her narrow escape from the
beach was reported by the Captain to
the lookouts at Meiggs Wharf.
The Catania left Astoria several days
ago and should have arrived early this
morning. Fog was met, however, off
the coast and she had to run under slow
bell. An examination of the vessel fol
lowing her arrival showed that she was
leaking in the bow and that there were
seven feet of water in the forward hold.

NEW SYSTEM .DESCRIBED
Automatic Fire Alarm May Be In
stalled Here.
Details of a new automatic Are alarm
system that the American District Tele
graph Company Is preparing to Introduce
at once in the larger cities of the coun
try, and it is expected will be started In
Portland In a few months, were described
yesterday by J. M. Maddoz, Pacific Coast
superintendent of the company, who ar
rived from San Francisco Wednesday and
Is staying at the Perkins Hotel. Mr.
Maddox is also traffic superintendent for
the Pacific Coast division of the Western
Union Telegraph Company.
The new system, which Is known as
the Aero Automatic Fire Alarm System,
has Just been perfected, and approved by
the National Board of Fire Underwriters.
It consists of a wire tubing, which is
about the size of the lead in an ordinary
pencil, being arranged In loops across
the celling of rooms. A sudden heat will
expand the air In the tube, causing It to
press on a diaphragm In a box to which
one end of the wire is connected, and the
movement of this diaphragm makes an
electrical connection that sends In the
alarm.
Mr. Maddox believes the new system
better than anything yet Invented, and
also cheaper. At his headquarters in San
Francisco, Mr. Maddox has fitted up an
experimental plant, to study the new sys
tem, and he has found It to give satis
faction In every way. A slow rise in tem
perature, such as caused by hot weather,
will not affect the alarm, as an escape
Is provided that will care for a slow pres
sure of atmosphere.

muscles and joints, instead of receiving their necessary nutriment from the
circulation are gradually filled with the sharp uratio impurity with which
the circulation is loaded, and the pains and aches of Rheumatism are the
natural result. No amount of rubbing, or the application of external med

expected from such treatment is temporary relief from the pains and aches.
There is but one way to cure Rheumatism, and that is to cleanse the blood
of the urio acid impurity. 8. S. S. is the proper treatment, because it goes
down and attacks the disease at its head, and by filtering out every particle
of the uratio matter and strengthening and enriching the blood, cures
Rheumatism in every form. S. 8. 8. changes the sour, acid-burdened blood
