Portland; To Ofex East Seventeenth The Importance of extending East Seven teenth etret through Midway .Is con aidered so great that another effort will be made to get- It opened. All effort so far have faifed for the reason the chief burden was thrown on a few prop erty owner in Midway, who were called on to give trfe right of way. The report of the viers was not satisfactory. East Eevent-enth atreet is now opened north and south of Midway. It haa been Im proved up to Midway from the north aid, and eouth of Midway the street rai been opened and is being: Improved. To extend the street through Midway means that considerable private prop erty must be appropriated. The street lo "wanted also for a water main. L. W. Darling, of the Midway Push Club, said yesterday that he would call a mening of the club to consider the ques tion as soon as a hall .can be secured. Will Constdbtr Sphcial Election. At the mass meeting tonight In Woodmen of the World hall, Russell street and Tlodnev avenue, under the auspicea of the United East Side Clubs, the question of holding a special election to vote on tr. m-et'nod of laying water mains and consolidating the offices of City Engineer and engineer of the Water Board will be considered. Several of the push clubs have already adopted resolutions favor ing a special election to vote on these questions, which have been submitted to Mavor Simon, and at this meeting the federated club will take action. Ben Rietland and L. B. Rice, of the Seventh "Ward Improvement league, will talk on this special election question. A full re port of all that has been done toward the erection of the Broadway bridge will be made by M. G. Munly. Bdbtness . Men's Excursion. The busi ness men's excursion to the Grange Fair. In progress at Gresham. given by the East Side Business Men's Club, will leave this afternoon at 1 o'clock, from East Morrison and East Water streets. All memters of the club and their wives aire, Invited to go. The club has char tered cans enough for the trip, and the only cost will be the price of admifsion to tha Fair. It la desired by the oMcers of the club to make as good a showing a possible and they urge all business men to go If convenient. Those who desire to return esrlter than the club's chartered cars can do so at any time In the afternoon. Today will be the Im portant day of the Fair. Latino Water Main. Contractor Archie Mason Is installing the eight-inch wtr main on Hawthorne avenue, be tween. East Third and East Twelfth streets, along the north sido of the street. It will soon be out of the way of the paving company, which Is pre paring to Improve thl portion of Haw thorne avenue. Grading has all been finished and material la being assembled. East from East Twelfth street, the paving company is pushing tre Improve ment rapidly. With favorable -weather for four or five .weeks the entire Improve ment of Hawthorne avenue may be com pleted. Thomas Brande appeared yesterday morning be fore Judge Bennett In the Municipal Court, being sentenced to .TO days on the rockplle upon the conviction of having been abusive and brutal to his wife. Brande lives at 7K Ailiina avenue. Pa trolman Owens arretted him after he had been called to the Brande home by a terrible disturbance during the night on Tuesday. Brande has four small children. nd for this reason Judge Bennett sent word to his wife that if they needed Brande's, support he would released after one week's imprisonment. They were taken to the City Jail, where they gave the names of Mary Bell. 1 yeara old; Margaret Moore, 21 year old; Louise Ferris. 2! years) old; Ed Irwin. 20 years old. arni Charles Teall. 20 years old. The police say the suspects have no occupa tion and roam about from one to another of the North End saloors and other resorts. They could give ie police no explanation of how they rned their living. They will be arraigned In the Municipal Court upon the vagrancy charge. Nort Bnt Robbsjrt Charged. Ange lina Petrlena. an Italian, living In rooms over a saloon at 60 Second street North, wat arrested yesterday charged with larceny. The woman is accused by Joe Novak, a laborer, of robbing him of $10 In gold. The woman was arrested by Detectives 'Howell and Tlchenor, who likewise took into custody Jamea Fin lander, the proprietor. The officers had learned that wnen Novak complained of the robbery to Flnlander he had pounced upon Novak and had thrown htm out into the street with great violence. The prisoners were locked up In the. City Jail. Caught With Worthless Check. Caught In the act of attempting to pass a worthless clieck upon the clerk of the New Grand Central Hotel. Third and Flanders streets. Henry Hamilton was taken Into custody yesterday afternoon and now is a prisoner in the City Jail. The check waa made out for $15 and Hs appearance was of such a character as to arouse the suspicion of the clerk, who telephoned to the police station. Pa trolman Manring was sent after Hamil ton, who finally admitted that the check waa worthless. Hamilton is said by the police to be a hanger on about the North End. Non-Support Is OHARGBD.-Vpon com plaint of Mrs. Rose Benion. Patrolman Circle yesterday afternoon arrested J. R. Benton, a clothing salesman, charg ing non-support. Benton had been absent from his home for several days indulging freely In liquor as a result of a family quarrel. When he did not re turn his wife Anally appealed to District Attorney Cameron and signed a com plaint. Benton waa taken to the City Jail. Rev. E. K. Allbk to Lc-runn. Rev. E. Nelson Allen, of the Hawthorne Pres byterian Church, has accepted an Invita tion to deliver his lecture on "Egypt. Palestine and Syria." tonight at the Second Baptiat Church, East Seventh and Baet Ankeny streets. The lecture will be an account of Rev. Mr. Allen's per sonal experiences during his recent visit to the Holy Land. It will be illustrated with sptereopticon views. Ttmi Beth Israbt. Services. United States Senator Chamberlain was a visitor to the office of Mayor Simon yesterday morning. Senator Chamberlain called to "pay his respects." he said. The Mayor said he felt that a Senator should do that much while in the city, and , Senator Chamberlain said he was glad to know the Mayor is getting along so well. The visit was very brief. The Woman's Guild of Grace Me morial Eplwopal Church will give a "pumpkin pie party" this evening at 8 o'clock, in the beautiful new parish house, on Bast Seventeenth and Wiedler. An excellent musical programme has been prepared and seasonable refresh ments will be served. A cordial invita tion is extended to all to be present. Admiseion J5 cents. ' Funeral of ,Frank J. Middleton. The funeral of Frank J. Middleton, who died at the home of his brother, D. Vf. Middleton. 1637 Belmont street, October IS. was held yesterday afternoon from Finlev'a chapsl. Interment was In Rose Citv Cemetery. Mr. Middletcn was 39 years of age. Services to Be Held. Services will be held this evening by Congregation Ahaval 9holom, at tlie corner of Park and Clay streets, at 8 o'clock. The choir will attend. Tomorrow morning services will be hsld at 9:30 o'clock. I xing Controversy Between Water and Fire Department to Be Settled. Mayor Simon will be called upon In the next tew days to decide upon a policy as to which department shall pay for flre hydrants, the question being as to whether this shall be done by the Water Department or the Fire Depart ment. Chief Campbell has asked for 600 hydrants, and at the meeting of the fire committee of the City Executive Board, yesterday afternoon, the matter was referred to the Mayor. Thla la a question over which the Lane administration had a long-drawn-out controversy. Dr. Lane holding that the Water Board should use Its funds for the extension of mains only, and that the hydrants should be purchased from Fire Department money. The Council and the Mayor and Water Board engaged In- a fight over the subject, the Council appropriating- I4J.000 of water funds for hydrants. The Mayor and members of the Board refused to make the purchases, and tha appro priation la still Intact. There has been nothing to bring up the matter since the new regime took office, until yes terday 'afternoon, when Chief Campbell called attention to It. "I feel," said Chairman O'Shea, of the flr oommlttee, "that the hydrants should be purchased by the Water Board, as It seems to me they are a part of the water system. Sam Connell, the other member who was present, held the same view as Chairman O'Shea. and the matter was referred to Mayor Simon on the ques tion of policy. The Mayor will Investi gate It at once. There is a movement to provide a first-class blacksmith shop for each of the city barns, of which there will soon be three, a third one being under way now. When this is done, it is the pur pose to have all of the city horses shod bv municipal employes, which will ef fect a saving of perhaps $5000 annually. It cost the street-cjeanlng department last year $3500 for horse-shoeing."
