SOCIETY IS OUT IN FORCE
Handsome Gowns VI With Equine
Aristocracy In Centering Atten
tion of Spectators Awards
of Judges Announced.
(Continued from First PK-)
: there Is no reserved space and anyone
i may ret a box by merely paying the
price.
Judging Begins Early.
The Judging In the various classes be
. vgan coincident with the opening of the
Initial matinee at 2 P. M, and continued
i until the conclusion of the night dls
, plays. The first event of the day was
tthe Judging of twelve trotters in single
.harness. The Judging was made on con
formation, quality, manners and style of
lgolng. Nine of the twelve horses were
'Portland animals, two were from Seat
'tle and one from Tacoma.
This was followed by the displaying
and Judging of other road classes bar
mess pairs in trotters and pacers, saddle
ponies, saddle thoroughbreds, high step
pers, tandems, hunters and Arabian types.
Far more spectacular and interesting
was the night show. The first event was
the Judging of five pairs of heavy draft
horses, splendid ponderous animals whose
gaits told of the strength of locomotives.
In addition to half a dozen ordinary road
classes, made up of extraordinary speci
mens of blooded horseflesh, there were
combination horses, gig horses, and an
open Jumping class.
' Circle Ring Fire Times.
The manner of Judging was such as
to give the spectators every opportunity
to see the horses at their best. For the
1 rules made It necessary for all entries
to make five circuits of the show ring,
after which a stand would be called and
the competition narrowed down to actual
winners. In many Instances the public
; fancy and the findings of the Judges va
', rled widely, since an unusually showy
, horse was sure o( general applause,
. while some animal of less spectacular
I habits would probably win out on fine
points. Captain J. Q. McDonnell, of New
York, and F. E. Alley, of Koseburg, are
acting as Judges.
Many were the splendid exhibitions of
riding and driving, especially by the
ladles and children. It would leave a
cowboy creatfiallen and sick with envy
to witness the graceful ease with which
the ladles in the saddle classes handle
their mounts. For the Judging requires
trotting ana) galloping and the thorough
; breda generally cannot resist the tempta-
tion to throw themselves about and cut
up camera. The most troubled antic on
! the part of their mount did not cause
': any of the ladles or misses the slightest
- concern yesterday.
Much Interest in Awards.
Interest quite as keen as in any hard
fought competition attends the awarding
j of prises. The person of first magnitude
I at the Oriental building Is the one whose
i mount or team has taken a blue rosette,
which Is the emblem of first award. Red
. denotes second, yellow third and white
. fourth.
From now on until lata Saturday night
i the Judging will continue. The final
event will be for the beet type of harness
horse, shown In hand, and the contest
will be confined to winners of first and
second prizes.
This afternoon the Judging of children's
ponies will be taken up at 2 o'clock sharp.
, This will be followed by varied classes
of road horses. The night programme
will be elaborate. Including saddle and
harness animals, delivery horses, heavy
draft horses, cavalry horses, slx-ln-hand
draft teams, polo ponies, five-galted sad
dle horses and high Jumpers.
Judges Satisfy AIL
In awarding the blue, red and yellow
ribbons, the coveted honors of every
horse show. Judges McDonnell and Alley
succeeded In giving satisfaction, for it
was plainly apparent that ttie two ex
perts made their selections with care and
precision.
In the afternoon the programme was
finished expeditiously, and the same pro
; cedure marked the work of the Judges
; in the evening. The night show, how
; ever, was featured by the competition
between four young women, and as one
or the other gained an advantage of an
extra ribbon In a different class, the big
crowd applauded vehemently. The princi
pal struggle was between Miss Eleanor
Laidlaw. of Spokane, who rode and drove
her father's fine horses, and Miss-LJUran
O'Brien, of Portland, who handled her
horse. Flashlight, in several events and
divided honors with Miss laidiaw's Tsar.
Girl Rider Cheered.
When little Miss Helen Farrell, daugh
ter of J. D. Farrell. of Seattle, rode and
drove the Moor so successfully as to be
awarded the blue ribbon in the combina
tion class the spectators thoroughly ap
proved of the Juiteea' selection. Miss
Farrell, though but a slip of a girl,
showed she was amply able to handle
horses, and many were astonished at her
riding and driving.
Flashlight, owned and ridden by Miss
O'Brien, and Tsar, ridden by Miss Laid
law, came together on two occasions.
The first time the Spokane girl was the
victor, and Miss O'Brien was tendered the
red ribbon, but on the next meeting of
the two handsome horses the Portland
girl was victorious and bore off the blue
ribbon triumphantly. Mlsa Beraice
Baker, of Tacoma, who haa entered a
number of high-class hor9es, was singu
larly unfortunate in not being able to
secure a blue ribbon yesterday. Her
splendid gelding. -Highland Gaines, lost
the blue In one division toy a narrow
margin, for the Judges were not able to
dec!de against her entry for several
minutes. Miss Baker bore her defeats
gracefully, and may yet experience the
good fortune wntah followed her at last
season's show.
Show- Is Best Yet.
AD of the events were keenly contested,
end the class of entries Is easily the best
that has appeared at any horse show In
the Northwest slnoe the popular exposi
tions have been In vogue. Another fea
ture of last night's show was the clever
drill given, by 16 members of the riding
classes of Professor Von Oilman's school.
The maneuvers of the men and women
riders were highly pleasing, and many
regrets were expressed when the drill
was curtailed to allow continuance of the
Judging.

Fair Women. Stunning Gowns,
Gems, at Horse Show.
OLD FORMALITY UNKNOWN
Society Turns Out en Masse to
View Equine Aristocracy Oc-
cupants pf Boxes Visit
Between Numbers.
With each succeeding year the
Horse Show of the Portland Hunt
Club seems to eclipse Its predecessors.
Such was the order last night, when
the equine aristocracy vied with the
stunning gowns of the women for su
premacy. The stiff formality that char
acterized the first year's show, and
was In a measure repeated In the sec
ond, was last night entirely eliminated,
seeming to have given way to an easy,
informality without which the success
of a Horse Show Is sine qua non.
The display of gowns, jewels and furs
was much in advance of last year,
many creations of foreign make being
In evidence, and It is apparent that
social Portland is developing rapidly in
the manner of Horse Show entertain
ments which 'have been such brilliant
affairs In New York and abroad. There
was much visiting among occupants
of the various boxes, and promenad
ing was decidedly popular. Several
tiers immediately behind the boxes had
been removed for the occasion, thus
making a wider thoroughfare, and en
abling the women fo show to advantage
their handsome costumes.
An augmented orchestra was sta
tioned pt one end of the upper gallery,
boxes were draped with brilliant red
and white bunting, the Hunt Club col
ors. The prominent women who rode and
drove, as well as as the 16 members who
participated in the artistic quadrille, were
each, in turn, warmly welcomed and ap
plauded. Numerous dinner parties preceded
the evening, performances, as well as
luncheons prior to the opening mati
nee. But the majority of incidental
entertaining was deferred - until after
the show, when the grills were taxed
to their capacity by supper parties of
various sizes. Here also there was a
decided keynote of informality and the
decoratiotia of the Portland Hotel, in
particular, came in -for much praise.
Each window was encircled by enor
mous wooden horseshoes, gleaming
with scarlet lights, quantities of beau
tiful flowers were in evidence as well
as all the trophies of the chase, rid
ing whfps, papier mache horses' heads,
saddles and two inanimate life-sized
horses stationed at the entrance of the
grill, on which were mounted Jocxeys
in gally-hued costumes. Taking last
night as a sample, the four remain
ing performances promise to go down
in history as the most brilliant horse
show ever given In Portland.
