He spoke to them briefly in a happy vein and then was driven to the First Universalis! Church. East Twenty-fourth and Broad way. Here a crowd of more than 15.000 await ed him and he again received the same whole-hearted, enthusiastic greeting that marked his appearance everywhere dur ing his stay In the city. An impressive, though brief, programme, was rendered. President Taft himself spread the mor ' tar for the cornerstone of the new edifice and set the stone in place. He handled the trowel with the ease and skill of a brirklaver and did an exceedingly neat , Job of placing the stone. Then he spoke. ut some length, and was returned to his hotel, reaching there at 5:08 P. M. The details for his departure had al i ready been attended to and he remained lat ease in his apartments until 6:52 o'clock when he was sped away to the depot. The depot was reached within five mtmites. The President stepped aboard his private car Immediately and remained until a few minutes before the time for departure, when he reappeared to say goodbye. In thanking, one by one. those -who had seen to his welfare and comfort while he was the city's guest, the President took occasion to send for Chief of Police Cox and Ceptain Bailey, whom he shook by the hand and thanked for their efficient work in preserving order at all times. The train was scheduled to leave at o'clock, but It was Just six minutes past that hour when It moved. "Goodbye." the President called. "Goodbye good luck and corae again," the farewell party called after him. 1'ntil the train turned east at the end of the depot grounds the President stood waving his hands In farewell. TAFT TALKS AT OREGON' CITY Tells People He Would Like to Stay In State Two Months. OREGON CITT, Oct. . (Special.) Four thousand people packed the Southern Pa cific depot grounds to suffocation tonight and cheered madly when the special train bearing President Taft and party stopped five minutes at Oregon City. The platform and overhead crossings were brilliantly illuminated with electric lamps strung about 14 Inches apart and the crossings were loaded down with women and children, the latter waving miniature American flags provided by Mayor Carll. The President spoke very briefly, for he was unable to make himself heard be cause of the enthusiastic welcome. He thanked the people for the warmth of their reception, though he knew they wel comed the President and not the man. Mr. Taft beamed his expansive smile and said: "I wish I could stay in Oregon two months instead of two days, for I Ilka the state and its people, for they are as fine as the big red Oregon apples." Hundreds of farmers came in today to , see the President and practically the. whole town turned out to do honor to : Taft. TEX-MIXUTE STOP AT SALEM President Jokes With Small Boys and Extols German-Americans. SALEM, Or- Oct. 3. (Special.) The ' special train of William Howard Taft and party, closely following the Shasta ' Limited, pulled into the Salem depot over the Southern Pacific road at 8 o'clock this evening. The President was on the rear plat form of his private car. and when the great crowd caught sight of the famous Taft smile, a mighty shout went up. After Joking with a crowd of small boys that swarmed about the platform of his car, the President spoke briefly to the assembled crowd on the qualities of good citisenshlp. His remarks were applied particu larly to the Germans, of whom he said lie understood there were many In this locality. He extolled the thrift and j.rudence of the Germans, and declared that thry are among the most substan tial people we have. Practically the entire city turned out to see and hear the President. The train stopped less than 10 minutes. ALBAX1", TOO, SEES TAFT Crowd of 2600 People Greets Presi dent In Valley Town. ALBAXT, Or.. Oct. 3 (Special.) Fully ISiO people turned out here tonight to , greet the President of the United States. H:s special train reached Albany at 8:40, and the depot platform and railroad yards were crowded with people. Two secret service men first appeared on the rear platform, and shortly afterward President Taft. followed by Captain Butt, came on the platform. The big crowd cheered lustily, and when there was a lull President Taft asked the name of the town and what In raised here. In response to calls fox a speech he said: "I am glad to see so many people, and thank you for this reception. If it were any other evening but Sunday I would be glad to make you a political speech, but I have been preaching all day in Portland, and you can't expect another sermon now." The crowd cheered the President heart IIv during the five minutes the train remained here. A crowd of young hood lum boys who had crowded around the platform kept Interrupting the proceed ings by trying to make funny remarks, and President Taft administered a re buke to them as the train pulled out. He remained on the platform bowing while the train passed through the big crowd. Woodbnrn Gets to See Taft. WOODBl'RX. Or.. Oct. 3. (Special.) President Taffs special stopped at Wood burn this evening for three minutes and the President was greeted by an Im mense throng. The reoeptlon pleased him and he spoke of the great time be had had in Oregon, saying he waa going out in "a blaxe of glory." Wana maker to Aid Art. PARIS, Oct. 4. Head and President Mem bers of Yale, 18 78 Educator's Son, t up-Bearer. Dr. J. W. Hill, principal of the Hill Military Academy, enjoys the distinction of being the only classmate of President Taft living In Oregon, and his son. Joseph A. Hill, has the honor of being the first boy born to any member of Yale's class of 1878, of which President Taft and Dr. J. W. Hill were members. Yesterday, following an appointment made at the luncheon Saturday, Dr. .Hill and his son called on the President. Old college days were recalled and memories of yore were revived. -The President asked about classmates living on the Coast and Dr. Hill was invited to call on the President at Washington. The Yale class of 1S78 holds a reunion every five years. At the triennial re union In 1S81. one year after the birth of J. A. HilU according to custom, the year-old boy. and the first born ri any member of the class, was presented with the class cup. President Taft presided at this banquet. John Proctor Clarke pre sented the cup and J. P. Plgott made the presentation speech. Mr. Clarke is now one of the Judges of the New York Pro bate Court and is the class boy of the Yale class of 1853. At the historical dinner there gathered 78 out of the former 122 members of the class. Nineteen of the members are liv ing now. One of the class living in the West is Judge William H. Hunt, of Helena. At President Taffs inauguration Inst Fall there were 78 of his classmates pres ent. Dr. Hill being among them. Tatt'a first official act as President was to give a tea to his classmates at the White House. Following, a private dinner of the class members was given at the Metropolitan Club in Washington. SHIPS IN HOLIDAY ATTIRE Matterhorn Shows Signal, "Welcome to the President." "Welcome to the President," in the In ternational code signal, was the greet ing offered to President Taft yesterday and Saturday by the flags flown from the British ship Matterhorn, one of the dis engaged grain vessels In the harbor. The craft was dressed from stem to stern and the array of flags was one of the finest displays made on the waterfront In honor of the visit of the Chief Execu tive of the Nation. The decorations of the German ship Frieda were in keeping with those dis played by the Matterhorn with the ex ception of the signal letters. All vessels in the harbor decorated In honor of the visit of President Taft to Portland. PARTY TO MEET TAFT GILLETT AND STAFF TO CORT PRESIDENT. ES- Bay City's Delegation Will Join Presidential Party at Shasta Spring's Today. SAN FRANCISCO, . Oct 3. Governor James N. Gillett, members of his staff and the reception committee of 10 busi ness men from the Bay cities, boarded a special car at Oakland tonight in wlilch thev will Journey to Shasta. Springs to meet President Taft and act as a guard of honor. The car will be coupled to the President's train and come with it to Oakland, where the President will ar rive at 7:18 A. M. Tuesday. The ground floor of the hotel is 100 feet above the ocean, which is seen in the background. Hotel Bayocean will rival the hotels of the Southern Cali fornia resorts in the completeness of its appointment. Four hundred dollars has been appropriated to furnish each room. The cost of the buildirig and furnishings will be $350,000. The hotel faces both the Pacific and the landlocked bay. On the ocean side a great glass-enclosed porch will provide a unique resting place from which to view the surf and the won derful expanse of water. The ground to the westward slopes directly from the building down upon splendid Bayocean Beach, with its four miles of clean, hard sand and four miles -of glorious breakers where young and old may enjoy surf bathing in absolute safety. A few steps away is the ocean side natatorium. Twelve acres ef a naturally beautiful park have been set aside as the.hotel grounds. This park extends toward the bay nearly to Bay Boulevard, the equivalent of Atlantic City's Boardwalk. Every detail of Hotel Bayocean. when it is opened to the public, will be found to meet the requirements of the highest a National Guard Company drawn up at the station to flre a ealute. The only stop between the northern state line and Oakland will be at Sacra mento at 7 o'clock Monday evening. The President's car will remain there over night and he will be entertained with a banquet. Leaving Sacramento at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, the next stop will be at Oakland, where the car will be side-tracked for the triple celebra tion of the Bay cities, which will be be gun with a review of the school children of Berkeley on the University of Califor nia Athletic Field, and end with a ban quet at the Fairmont Hotel. The President will leave San Francisco at 8:20 o'clock Wednesday morning for the Yosemite, where he will spend four days before continuing his Journey to Los Angeles and the southern tier of states. A delegation representing the honorary commercial commission of Japan left here tonight for New York to pay their respects to Prince and Princess Kunl, who will be at Niagara Falls Monday en route to japan. Preparations were completed here today for the en tertainment of President Taft when he visits the Yosemite Valley October 6. Society people of Portland will at last be able to invite their; Eastern friends to a beach, resort hotel on the Oregon coast that will provide the accommodations to which they are accustomed. The faet that the court of Hotel Bayocean is 20 feet wider than that of the Hotel Portland con veys some conception of its size. The low building .to the right of the hotel is the 60-room annex. This building will also contain the kitchens, servants' dining-room, the steamheating plant for the hotel, the laundry and the ice plant, thus leaving the hotel proper exclusively for tiie oomfort of the guests.
