UNSETTLED AT THE CLOSE Transactions Are on an Enormous Scale Call Money Market lie- ' mains Tranquil Bonds Are Irregnlar. NEW TORK, Sept. 19. The stock specu lation opened at a irallop toilay. but th strain of the pace became obvious early In the day. The rush to buy and bid up prices mafle an active opening, with spread prices of the speculative favorltos on sim ultaneous transactions which reached as much as SO.u'iO shares In I'nlted States Steel and 10.000 share's In Atchison. There were wide openings also In other stocks and top prices were recorded. This was true of I'nited States Steel and Atchi son and Chi.apeake & Ohio. The higher openinB of ' in United States Steel had teen exceeded earlier in the day in the London market, where the stock sold ai the New York equivalent of 90S.' The first hour's business saw an enormous pressure of realizing sales In all quarters. While a few stocks were aa-Rruslvely ad-,anc-d. the rest of the list held buck and In some quarters there were signs uf pos itive depression. Supposed dividend pros pects atcaln played an important part in the speculative motive forces. Tho favorably 'showing of August net earnlufcs of rall ronds Is a fislerln lnlluence on tills ex pectation. United States Steel, Vennsyl vnnla. Southern racillc and others were in fluenced by this factor today, and each ex ercised an lnlluence on other stocks in which, circumstances afro analogous. The call money market renalned tran quil in spilo of the forces of cash deple tion at work and the time money market was notably easier in tone. Discount rates In foreign money markets were firm. The closing; tone was much unsettled. The number of shares sold was the largest since the excited markets In April in con nection with the reported listing of United Suites Steel on the l'arls bourse. Honds were lrrvgular. LEWISTOK, Idaho, Sept. 23. (Special.) The petition Is headed by Attorney John O. Bender, but a number of prominent citizens of the Central Idaho country are Interested. The petition alleges that under the provisions of the state charter the state shall not acquire title to mineral lauds in its selections of public lands for the maintenance of tne state institutions. The state recently issued a lPase to Charles Hofstetter, T. H. Greenlee and M. S. Stellman for a 'term of 25 years, the lease being drawn pursuant to a state law which provides for 2.T-year leases for mineral lands. The petitioners allege this law is in direct violation with the act of Congress, which provided for the ad mission of the state of Idaho Into the Union, and the negotiation of such a lease is conclusive proof of the State v LUMBERMENS National Bank CORNER FIFTH AND STARK STREETS WM i Slip B B OLDEST BANK ON CAPITAL $1,000,000 SURPLUS and PROFITS $500,000 OFFICERS.
