' v Proprietor of Delmonlco, Who Has Given Police Much Trouble, Is Given Severe Punishment. Edward D. Johnson, proprietor of the Delmonlco Restaurant, at Seventh street, near Alder street, was convicted yester day morning of selling liquor without license and was sentenced to serve 60 days" Imprisonment and pay a fine of JloO. This Is the most severe penalty administered by the Police Court for violations of the liquor ordinances In years and is intended, states Judge Ben ret, to serve as a warning to restaurant men who persist in selling liquor against the law. Johnson has figured in numerous cases with the police but managed to escape punishment. The testimony showed that Sergeant Klenlen. who had arrested him twice, had to force his way into the place. . - Klenlen said to gain entrance to the restaurant he waited until nearly 3 o'clock in the morning when a taxicab, occupied by a woman, arrived. She knocked at the door and Johnson, after his customary "peek" through the cur tains, admlted her. Before the restaurant man could get the door looked, Klenlen .sprang forward and tried to effect an entrance. A struggle ensued in which the officer forced Johnson back. Inside, the boxes were filled with men and wo men, gathered about tables on which beer and other liquors appeared in abundance. Attorney Seneca Fouts represented the defendant and tried to have the case dis missed on the ground , that it had not been proven that the liquor had been sold In the place.
