11 AUGUST 17,. 1909. XilU A'A W --- --- . v '- - wi " , ... , i mutual insurance mficohti Association Embracing Entire Country Here for Its 14th Annual Session. WORK TO BE TALKED OVER Organization, Says President Gasche, Has Advisory Powers Only, and Object Is to Promote Busi ness Success of Members. The 14th annual National convention of the American Association of Mutual Fire Insurance Companies will hold the opentna- exercises in the W. O. W. Hall, on Eleventh near Alder street, at 10 o'clock this morning. The convention has about 150 delegates here represent ing the majority of the 2000 mutual companies In the United States, all of which are eligible for membership In the association. Some of the delegates represent several companies. while some an entire state. They are assem bled from all over the country, with the exception of the Southwest, where there are no mutual fire Insurance com panies. The convention will continue for four days and various papers on the sub ject of handling the mutual Insurance business will be read and discussed. The officers of the association will oe elected Friday, and at that time the choice will be made for the Jocation or the convention next year. The State of Illinois Is here with a full delegation to secure the next convention for Pe oria. J. J. Case, president of the Illi nois State Association, is here with very officer of the state association, and the general Impression around the Oregon Hotel, the headquarters for the convention, is that Peoria will secure the meeting. The majority of the dele gates present are from the Northwest and the Middle West, the main strength of the mutual companies lying in these sections! Gasche to Bo Re-elected. TV. B. Gasche. of Topeka. Kan., presi dent of the association. It is generally conceded will be re-elected to the pres idency, although It Is thought probable that one at least of the other offices will have a new Incumbent in order to fit In with the plans for holding the convention in a new locality next year. W C. Hagerty. of McMlnnville. Or., waa chosen vice-president last year on ac count of tbe convention coming here. Two of the committees the auditing committee and the resolutions commit tee will be appointed by President Gasche. while all the standing commit tees are elective and will be chosen Friday. B L. Barry, of Dayton. O.. has charge of the entertainment of the visiting fire Insurance men. He has arranged a trip to the Oaks for this evening, and on Thursday the party will be taken to Cascade Locks in a steamer chartered by the Oregon delegation. The programme for today consists of the opening exercises at 10 A. M-. fol lowed by an address of welcome to the convention by C N. McArthur. private secretary to the Governor. A. B. Smith, of Topeka. Kan., will deliver the re sponse, after which will be the address by President Gasche. In the afternoon session M. D. L. Rhodes, of Seattle, will read a paper on "Office Methods and Bookkeeping." and B. L. Barry, of Day ton, a paper on "Hazards and Kates. These two papers, with discussion, will occupy the entire afternoon and this nature of work wll continue through out the convention. In speaking of the association President Gasche savs: What Association Stands Fop. "The thing that Is uppermost and most vital In the Improvement of our different local companies Is to secure a more complete classification of risks and adjustments of risks to the haz ards; or. In other words, the rate npon each class of property should be such that If the entire business of that com pany were made up of that class of risks It could succeed. This point and an endeavor to arrive at some conclu sion toward the adoption of this princi ple will take up a great part of the time of the convention. "The convention itself Is what. If we were a bunch of Methodists, would be called an experience meeting. The convention has no power to enforce Its resolutions and Is really a meeting for general discussion and enlightenment. The object of the association Is to pro mote the Interests of the mutual com panies, but It has no other than an. ad visory connection with the local com panies. The real object, however. Is to improve the methods of transacting business and to obtain and circulate In formation on the subject of Insurance and to secure the Interchange of such knowledge, and to secure united action to strengthen Influence upon all legis lation affecting mutual Insurance com panies."
