asserting his sanity. Harry K. Thaw to
day published a statement reviewing the
evidence Riven in the recent hearing on
his application for release from Mattea
wan. In his argument to sustain his con
tention that he is now sane. Thaw said
that, according to the alienists. District
Attorney Jerome had proved him to be
sane "forty-five times over" in his long
questioning. Thaw's statement follows:
"The following is all I have to say
about the trial:
"Mr. Jerome's witnesses were an un
professional lawyer and an unfortunate
woman who contradicted each other, also
three of his peculiar alienists and Dr.
Baker, who from his testimony might
have been on either side, except that he
showed some friendliness to us and could
not remember many admissions he had
made to me and to Dr. Pilgrim.
Says Jerome Proved Him Sane.
"Ir. Baker admitted he did not believe
In souls because he had never seen any.
Ir. McDonald and Dr. Flint refused to
believe what Jerome had solemnly stated
to a Jury, so I hardly think any Judge
could beiieve any of them.
"The best experts have informed me
that If any insane man was questioned
for 20 minutes as Jerome questioned me
he would assuredly show his insanity. As
Jerome kept this up over 15 hours in all
during the trial, he proved me sane 45
- times over.
"Mr. Jerome at the end of the second
trial, after telling the Jury why he had
not produced Dr. Flint and company, said
he would submit the rase to human In
telligence. Cites Host of Witnesses.
"It would seem I must be perfectly
sane If hard-headed, sensible men who
slept In the same room with me. saw me
undress and go to sleep ana wase up,
then eat my breakfast, dinner and sup
rer and who took me up on the moun
tains where I could have left them mile
behind, had I not been trustworthy,
thought me sane. These and many
clergymen headed by President Patton of
Princeton and ladies, some of whom have
known me all my life, and bankers and
manufacturers and police and prison
kippers accustomed to observing both
