WALLOWA. Or.. Aug. 10. Special)
W. E. Curtis, of the Chicago Record
Herald, recognized as one of the fore
most writers in the country, accompanied
by his wife and daughter, arrived In
Wallowa County today in the special

tertained by Joseph citizens, headed by
F. D. McCully and T. V. Rumble. Ac

MfMurray. general passenger agent; J.
L. Matheson, assistant superintendent; J.
H. O'Neill, traveling passenger agant, of
the O. R. & K.. and E. W. Rumble, of
Lagr&nde.
Mr. Curtis Is making a special trip
through the Northwest, and is writing
up the country from his observations for
the Record-Herald. His article today will
describe the Wallowa YaJI-y as seen on
his hurried trip. Tomorrow will be spent
In the Grand Ronde Valley, where he

TWO SMALL BLAZES OCCUR
Rubbish Heap and Pool of Oil Call
Out l ire department.
The Fire Department was called out
twice last n!g?it between 6 and 7 o'clock
for Inconsequential blazes. The first was
In a, rubbish heap In a vacant lot at Fif
teenth and Taylor streets and was put out
without any damage. The second was a
flight blaz.- in the terminal yards at
Third and Irving streets. Drippings from
n oil tank which had collected into a
large pool on the ground became Ignited
from a lighted match which some care
less smoker had dropped in passing, and
biased up, creating a great deal of smoke.
Employes In the yards, fearing for the
safety of the oil tanks, began to work
before the arrival of the Ilremen. They
put out the flr by shoveling ashes upon
It from a nearby track. When the lire
men arrived the fire was out. No damage
w&e done.
PLAGUE SIGNS NOT FOUND
Test for Dread Malady Xot Vet
Complele, However.
After carefully examining the guinea,
pigs that were inoculated two days ago
to determine the disease of which John
McCartbey died last Sunday morning.
It. Ralph C. Matson. who is conducting
the investigations, announced last
night that he had found no positive
signs of plague in either of the two
animals. He further said the weight of
evidence was against such a condition.
The examination last night, however,
snowed germH of blood poison.
Plague evidences require from two to
five days to develop. As the guinea
pigs were inoculated only two days
ago the disease has hardly had time
to manifest itself. The animals will
be closely watched until the full. In
cubation period has passed.
