JULY 31. 1909. -1 E FOR SHOOT National Guard Marksmen Are Ready for State Meet. 120 WILL PARTICIPATE Keen Rivalry Is Shown Oxer Various Events of Annual Rifle Competi tion, Which Begins Tomorrow at Clackamas Station Range. National Guard riflemen from all parts of Oregon began arriving at the Clackamas rifle range yesterday, to participate In the annual state rifle competition whlcn commences tomor row. Teams of Ave men each are now on hand from Pendleton. Astoria. Port land. Oregon City. Woodburn, Cottage Grove. McMinnville. Roseburg. Albany. Eugene and Ashland. Teams from Baker City and The Dalles are due In camp this morning. The Fourth Oregon Infantry broke camp during the forenoon after its seven days of Held exercises, and the camp was turned over to the Incoming riflemen. The companies of the Fourth proceeded to their respective home sta tions by train, leaving their rifle teams behind. By 10 o'clock this morning 120 of the best shots In the state will be assem bled at the range for the various events of the annual shoot. Rivalry is as keen as ever over the several matches, and some remarkable scores are assured. Inasmuch as the troops are now thoroughly familiar with the new United States service rifle, the scores are expected to be Infinitely higher than a year ago, .when the weapon was a thing of unknown quan tity In many respects to many of the sharpshooters and experts. Aside from the events In which sol diers are entered, there will be several events open to all civilians. Matches In which every one may enter will be held on Sunday. Those who fancy they are mnil riflemen may then have an ample opportunity to find out whether or not they are suffering from a delusion. Special provisions have been made for allowing all visitors on the firing points, or near enough so that they may observe the contests or mirnsmmi ahln The competition will continue for three days.
