"LUCKY" JACK PAYS BILL
PRODVCES S1T7 WHE.V AtTTO IS
STOPPED BY OFFICERS.
Peterson Then Tear 0 1 0 Bill In Two
When His Attorney Is Tnable
to Make Correct Change.
"Lucky" Jack Peterson, whose pen
chant for spectacular limelight perform
ances Is well known, is again In the
public eye. but this time for quite a dif
ferent reason from his former exploits.
Yesterday as "Lucky" Jack -with a
party of friend came careening down
Third street in his six-cylinder touring
car. he was pounced upon by Constable
Wagner and Deputy Kieman and in
formed that his machine was attached
and would be sold under the hammer to
guarantee payment of a Judgment for
$!77.S against him in favor of S. W.
Tracy and F. E. Rodman, proprietors of
an Alder-street auto garage. unIc5S the
money was forthcoming.
The Oregon Baldwin roared in tones
like unto the distant rumblings of an
earthquake, but proceeded to get out a
thin checkbook and with much hauteur
and eclat signed his name to a check
calling for the specified amount.
"Hera." he said: "I must be off."
"Not so." murmured Constable Wag
ner, sotto voce. "Stay yet a while until
this paper has been investigated."
Deputy Kiernan hurried over to the
Vnlted States National Bank with the
check and payment was refused because
it was under date of Sunday. July IS.
He returned and found "Lucky" Peterson-smiling
covertly In anticipation of his
message. "Discovered." said Peterson.
'Well, here's a real one," and he pro-
ceeded to write another check, which was
accepted.
The debt wa incurred two months ago,
when Peterson ran his machine into a
streetcar, resulting in his auto being
rendered temporarily hors de combat.
He aent it to the Tracy-Rodman garage
for repairs, and when the bill was pre
sented refused to pay tt. saying the
amount wax excessive. The garage peo
ple then entered suit.
Peterson employed Attorney A. Walter
Wolfe to look after his Interest.
How much will your services cost
me?" asked "Lucky" Jack.
"Oh. $25." responded Wolfe.
Peterson pulled out a roll of bills and.
Peeling off two. one of $10 and the other
$20. proffered t"hem to the attorney. "I
haven't any change." said Wolfe. Peter
son calmly tore the $10 bill in two pieces
and. handed one-half to Wolfe and
walked out. He later Instructed Wolfe
by telephone not to fight the case. The
original amount was $163.74 and after go
ing to execution the amount totaled
$177.30.
Peterson once paid what was consid
ered a fabulous price for the present site
of the Wells-Fargo building. In a few
months realty values commenced jump
ing and when he sold the site his profits
amounted to twice what he paid for it
originally. Peterson also purchased the
steamer Elder while it was on the rocks
with no hope of ever being again placed
in commission. Soon after he became the
owner it was easily shoved off and he
made a considerable profit out of it.
