FIVE FISHERMEN DROWN
Weird Tales Sent From Bristol Bay
In Far-Away Alaska.
ASTORIA. Or.. July IS. The latest
reports from Nushagak River. Bristol
Bay. Alaska, show that while the fish
ing season haa been a successful one
at. u the catch gf lsh la concerned.
several of the men engared In the In
dustry have lost their lives as a result
Last evening O. Paulsen recejvea
a letter from Swen O. Belland.
stating that the weather had been
very rough, with strong gales, and
that five men were known to have
been drowned, while two others, who
were fishing for the Portland-Alaska
Packers' Association,, had been missing
for six days, and were supposed to have
been lost. One of the men drowned was
John Abrahamson. of Seattle, who
fished for the Columbia River Packers'
Association.
Another fatality reported was that f
a man named Nelson, hailing from
South Bend, who fell from the rigging on
one of the vessels while en route to
Alaska, and was killed. The two who
are missing from the Portland-Alaska
Packers' crew are Axel Hennlngsen ana
Oscar Anderson.
At the Indian village at Nushagak.
shortly before the cannery fleet ar
rived, two Indian women were killed
and eaten by dogs, which, owing to
the severe weather, were on the verge
of starvation.
Mr. Belland also writes that there is
a new United States Marshal at Nusha
gak. and that owing to his activity the
Jail there Is filled with prisoners wait
ing for trial. It la supposed they are
men charged with smuggling wnisay
into the territory.
All the letters which have been re
ceived from Bristol Bay tell of the run
of king salmon having been unusually
largo and that excellent packs have
been put up by all the canneries.
TO DEEPEN WOOD RIVED
GOVEIIXMENT ENGINEER IS IN
SPECTING STREAM.
Klamnth Falls Anxious to See River
Made Navigable Nearer Route
to Crater Lake.
KLAMATH FALLS. Or.. July 15.
Special.) Engineer Schubert, sent from
Washington to make a preliminary exam'
Inatlon of Wood River as to the prac
tlcablllty of Improving navigation on that
stream has arrived, and accompanied by
several officials of the Chamber of Com
merce, has gone to Wood River.
Wood River, the principal northern
tributary of the Upper Klamath Lake,
rises in the Cascade chain and in great
springs at the base of the mountains, and
flows for about 35 miles through the
Upper Klamath Valley, one of the most
beautiful valleys of the rich Klamath
Basin. In fact, the Upper Klamath Val
ley, with its fine streams of clear, cold
water. Its groves of pine and aspen trees
and its wide green meadows, is a natural
park of rare beauty, covering an area of
30,000 acres of meadow land, an area
unsurpassed on the Coast for dairying
purposes.
Lying between this area of 30.000 acres
now available for meadow and pasture
purposes, and the north end of the Upper
Klamath Lake, lies as much more land
of similar character, but In Its present
state too wet for use. Work In diking
and dredging is already In progress to
reclaim a large portion of this marsh
land, and it is a question of only a short
time when miles of this rich, alluvial hot
torn will be reclaimed from its wlldness
to contribute toward the wealth of the
country.
Wood River, which meanders through
this splendia valley, should be the main
artery of Its commerce and the direct
route for tourists from Klamath I-ake
and from the railroad at Klamath Falls
to the wonderland of the Crater Lake Na
tional Park and the famous hunting and
camping grounds within the Cascade For
est Reserve.
The straightening of this beautiful lit
tle river and the deepening of Its shal
lows to admit of its successful naviga
tion for small steamboats and launches
from Klamath Lake to a point several
miles above the town of Fort Klamath
would not cost much. With this accom
pllshed less than 20 miles would remain
to cover the distance from the head of
navigation to the very rim of Crater
Lake.
