The annual preneral meeting of the Portland Woman's Club was held yes terday afternoon, Mrs. Robert Lutke prestdlntr for the last time. The presi dent's report for the past year told of the club's growth, not only in numeri cal strensth. but also in the true "club spirit." Women are learning to differ and agree for a common good to the greatest number, she said, rather than for personal feeling. The programmes for the year have been varied and successful. The ques tion of financing the department work was also touched upon by the presi dent, and more fully discussed later in the meeting when an amendment to the constitution was passed, raising the membership fee from $5 to $10 and setting aside the money thus obtained as a fund which may be used for the promotion of department work. An amendment passed at the same time, provides that no club member shall receive pay for services to any department. The president also reported on the publicity work of the club. Visits nave been paid to leading local in dustrles in order that the club mem bers may inform themselves as to Port land's resources and use their influence for the advancement of its commercial interests. The question of a clubhouse was Also touched upon. Other amendments to the constitution wnicn were discussed and passed pro vide for - ohange in the tim of th nn nual election and the legibility of the retiring president for re-election. The search for the unknown assail ant of Miss Gertrude Lucke, the 17-year-old daughter of Emil Lucke, man ager of the Portland Art Glass works, who was attacked on the road to her home at Sylvan, one .mile from the terminus of the Portland Heights car line, Thursday night, has developed Into a still hunt on the part of the police detectives. William Bruce, a 24-year-old labor er, who came here recently from Tua latin, was arrested as a suspect yes terday morning by Patrolman Vessev. but after being taken to the girl's home he was released as she stated positive ly that he was not the man. This Is what happened yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. Frank Jackson, of 611 Jef ferson street, swore to a warrant for the arrest of Mrs. Lydia A. Piggot. of 249 Fourth street, for the larceny of a clock of the value of 15 cents. Mrs. Piggot asserts Mrs. Jackson owes her for room rent and says that Is why she is holding the clock When Mrs. Jackson, much excited, walked into the District Attorney's of fice yesterday afternoon and commenced a recitation of her troubles to Frank D. Henessey, of the District Attorney's staff, she exclaimed: "I want a war rant for the arrest of Mrs. Lydia E. Pinkham. "For whom." echoed Mr. Henessev. Mrs. Jackson then corrected herself ana speiiea tne name out for the bene fit of the official. The troubles between, the two com menced Thursday night, when a police officer accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Jack son to the Piggot rooming bouse and helped them secure their trunks. Thev hold a receipt for their room rent, but Mrs. Piggot says they had some friends staying with them and she Is entitled to rent from them. Constable Lou Wag ner, who went to serve the warrant, took possession of the clock and re turned it to Mrs. Jackson and told Mrs. Piggot to appear in Justice Court this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The contract, approved as to form by City Attorney Kavanaugh, signed by President Josselyn, of the Portland Rail way, Light & Power Company, and all ready for the signature of the Mayor, was laid upon the executive's table yes terday afternoon, but he was unable to peruse It during the day, and It Is still unsigned. Mayor Lane was asked as to his Inten tions concerning the contract, but evaded a direct answer by saying that he will not sign it until he reads It carefully It Is generally believed that he will sign the document, but if he does not. It Is probable that his successor In office. ex Senator Simon, will approve it when he assumes command, as It Is said to be a favorable proposition from the city's standpoint.
