Mile Speed Tests to Be
Held In Indiana.
OROWX POIXT. Ind., June 17.-Great
crowds began arriving tonight for the
opening of the auto races over the Crown
Point-Lowell circuit of 23.6 miles tomor
row. Excursion trains from every direc
tion brought thousands of people, as did
long lines of motor cars.
Tho First Illinois Regiment has arrived
rrom t.hit-Hgo. in command of Colonel
Joseph B. Sanborn. The khaki-clad guard
ians of tho course carried their shelter
tents ar.d blankets over their shoulders,
mid bctore midnight there were many
wh envied even this crude shelter.
Tomorrow the militiamen will be detailed
in squads along the entire ' course to
keep It clear.
Seventeen Cars to Compete.
Practice this afternoon differed from
that of preceding days save that the time
was not of ofticial formality.' It was
expected there would be 18 cars in the
race hut the withdrawal of the Ford
reduced the number 17.
The race is for light, stock cars, which
will contest for the Indiana trophy. There
are 17 entrants, as follows:
Corbln, A. J. Malsonville; Buick, Robert
lurnian: Marion. Charles Stutz: Chalmers-Detroit.

o,he Cr0rn Pont-Lwell parkway is
,-3.6 miles in length, with long straight
aways on three sides. The fourth side Is
Irregular from Crown Point to Cedar
I-ake about five milea. As the Indiana
trophy race calls for 10 laps, the cars
must travel 236 miles. This is But 61
miles less than the distance covered In
the anderbilt race on Long Island last
year.
Long Race Saturday.
The Cobe cup race on the Crown Point-I-owell
route Saturday, the big event of
the meet. Is 17 laps, or 402 miles, which
is 105 miles longer than the Long Island
route.
It will furnlshe one of the severest
tests of automobile stability In the his
tory of motor-car racing. In fact, it has
been stated by many drivers that the
pilot w ho best saves his car will win both
races.
The course Is in good condition. Better
than a mile a minute has been made in
practice, and although there were some
revere bumps, these were no more numer
ous than is to be expected In a race of
the present length.
Fast Practice Time.
A few of the drivers, too eager to await
the official afternoon practice, sped
around the course this morning Robert
son. In his locomobile, took another trial
at the -S" curve, beating all previous
records.
He dodged several truck wagons and
yet made the lap. according to an ordi
nary watch, in 2.1:10. Several watchers
gave Lyttle, in an Apperson, credit for
-I minutes.
