Estacada Election Tomorrow
Will Be Bitter Contest.
POLITICAL FEUD AT HEIGHT
Komi It of Recent Recall Klectlon
AVill Be Battle, Royal Between
Heylman and Reld Forces
in Regular Balloting.
Rival political factions in the mountain
town of Estacada will settle their dif
ferences at fhe rolls tomorrow In the
regular biennial municipal election. One
fa 'till, headed by Mayor W. A. Heyl
maii. is seekinsc re-electin. This ticket
will be opposed by another, whose can
didate for Mayor Is J. W". Reed, ex
Mayor of the municipality. So Intensely
bitter has the contest become that every
one of the 11 legal voters of the city
lias lined up with one side or the other,
with the result thaf a full vote will mark
tlie most exciting election since the city
assumed corporate shape about four
ears a?o.
Tho situation at Estacada Is unusual in
fhe history of Oregon towns. There has
been continuous wrangling between the
two factions ever since the town was in
corporated. Business rivalry probably is
more responsible than any other one
consideration for the oripln of the trouble
which has divided the city almost evenly
astainst itself. This chaotic condition
continued under the regime of Mayor
Jieyiman and culminated about a month
m when Recorder A. X. Johnson, a
monner of the Reid faction, officially
tailed a special recall election.
Mayor Heylman and the other mem
bers of his administration ignored this
election and refused to participate there
in, with the result that about 57 votes
w ar cast, almost unanimously for Reid
lur Mayor and the following five mem
bers of the City Council on the Reid
ticket: L. E. Belfils, A. E. Sparks. Al
I.indsey, Charles Shutter and W. D.
Henthom. The deposed members of the
Heylman council were: C. F. Howe, A.
Mavon.s. William Dale, B. O. Boswell
and J. F. Lovelace. In tomorrow's elec
tion these men will be arrayed against
each other.
: Following the recall election the' Reld
forces Instituted a suit In the State Cir
cuit Court at Oregon City to compel the
Hoylman administration officially to can
vass the returns of the recall election
and issue certificates of election to the
successful candidates in that election.
This proceeding was dismissed by Judge
Campbell Saturday after the Heylman
crowd had agreed to restore the offi
cial records of the city to Recorder John
son, the right being reserved to them,
however, to inspect the records when
ever they so desired. -
The case having been thrown out of
the courts. It is now up to the warring
factions to fight their troubles" out 'at
the polls in the regular city election to
morrow. Both sides are determined to
win, and a hot contest is promised. The
Heylman people profess confidence in
their ability to rout the recall advocates,
while the Reid forces declare they are
just as confident that they will retire
the present officers and obtain control
of city affairs. "
Don't be fooled by those who have an
ax to grind. Vote No 161. J. O. HOYT.

EIGHT FIRE ALARMS RING
Home in . Willsburg Destroyed.
Other blazes Are Tiny.
Yesterday was a record day for fire
alarms in Portland, but out of eight
alarms there was only one fire of any
consequence. It occurred in Willsburg,
beyond the city limits, south of Sell-
wood addition. A two-story frame house
was completely destroyed. The loss is
estimated at 2500.
A careless smoker, who threw a lighted
cigarette out of an office window, was
responsible for a slight blaze at the Med
ical building at Park and Alder streets.
An awning over a third floor window
caught fire, but waeasily extinguished.
The damage was slight.-
Other fires were: 434 First street at 8
o'clock, no damage; -309 Harrison street
at 11 o'clock, slight damage; Schuyler
THE ROSE IN POETRY AND SONG
Fair dewy roses brush against our faces,

Queen rose of tho rose-bud garden of

Come hither! the dances are done;
In gloss of satiil and glimmer of pearls.
Queen lily and rose in one;
Shine out. little head, sunning over with
curls.
To the flowers, and be their sun.
There has fallen a splendid tear
From the passion-flower at the gate.
She is coming, my dove, my dear;
She is coming, my life, my fate!
The red rose cries, "She is near, she Is
near" :
And the white rose, weeps. "She Is late";
The larkspur listens, "I hear. I hear,"
And the lily whispers, "I wait."

I will not have the mad Clytic,
Whose head is turned by the sun;
The tulip Is a courtly queen.
Whom, therefore. I will shun;
The cowslip is a country wench.
The violet is a nun;
But I will woo the dainty rose.
The Queen of every one.
The pea is but a wanton witch.
In too much haste to wed.
And clasps her rings on every hand;
The wolfsbane I should dread;
Nor will I dreary rosemarye.
That always mourns the dead;
But I will woo the dainty rose,'
With her cheeks of tender red.
The lily is all in white, like a saint.
And so is no mate for me.
And the daisy's cheek is tipped with a
blush,
She is of such low degree;
Jasmine is sweet, and has many loves;
And the broom's betrothed to the bee;
But I will plight .with the dainty rose.
For fairest of all is she.
