BY IV. J. PEIBAIX.
"Speed Marvel" Jaca Killilay. one of
Bob Brown's promising youngsters, wai
on the mound for Spokane yesterday, and
between the five hits he allowed and his
13 strike-outs, coated the Portland team
with whitewash. The Indians, by batting
Chenault at timely intervals, scored two
runs, one more than enough to win the
game. While Killilay pitched a fine game
and was given excellent support, his
speed counted, because the day was un
usually dark.
Most of Killilay's fanning bees are due.
to the very foolish habit contracted by
the Portland players of standing at the
plate and allowing the third strike to be
called on them, and this was glaringly ap
parent yesterday. Killilay gave two bases
on balls yesterday, one to Garry and the
other to Casey, and the others who tried
to wait him out were benched on balls
that should have been offered at, at least
occasionally.
Bill Chenault pitched a good game and
was remarkably steady at all times. He
worked hard to win. and with any kind
of batting support he might have done
so. for Portland had runners at second
and third bases frequently enough to cop
most any old kind of a game. At these
opportune intervals, however, the follow
ing batsmen seemed inclined to desire
passes and. instead, were struck out.
Runs cannot be scored on strikeuots. and
very seldom from being forced over on
walks.
In the second Inning, with two men
safely pickled away in the storage vat.
Ostdiek singled and stole second, which
feat was followed by Bob Brown's clean
single, on which the speedy catcher regis
tered. Killilay filed to Murphy, and it
seemed unfortunate for Portland, though
fine business for Spokane, that Brownie,
of all the Indian sluggers, should have
been the pinch hitter in that Instance.
The next ace collected by Spokane was
due to Buck Connors' healthy swat for
two bags In the sixth. This was followed
by an error by Mull in, who dropped a
thrown bail, and Ostdlek's infield tap
which could not be fielded in time to stop
the big catcher at first.
Both teams played a fine fielding game,
but batting feats were not as frequent
as misht have been, for the two twirlers
were working well. While Chenault did
not score as many strike-outs as did Kil
lilay. he fanned eight of the Indians, and
that is better than the average.
Eddie Klnsella will heave for Casey to
day, while Rusty Wright or 1rven Jensen
will do the honors for Spokane.
The official score is as follows:

NEI.SOX-HYLAND FIGHT NEAR
Arratr Promle to lie Gruelling
Scrap, aa Nelllrer Is "Jultter."
SAN FRANCISCO. May 2.-(3peclal.
Interest is very keen in the coming fight
between Bat Nelson and Dick Ilyland. as
It promises to be one of the most gruel
ling contests ever held here, because of
the flghtlns spirit of both men. Nelson
and Hyland are sluggers pure and simple
and will wade right Into each other from
the tap of the bell, and it will be then
only a question of who has the greater
staying powers.
Nelson figures that he ran stand all
the punishment that any man can give
him under equal weight conditions. How
ever, if he has lost any of his old-time
stamina, he will find Hyland about the
toughest nut he ever tackled, a fighter
much after Nelson's own style, and a boy
who Is in the pink of condition.

SAN FRANCISCO. May 245. (Special.)
Kollle Zeldefs base-running and his
timely two-baggers "were not only the
features of today's game, but In the
main they contributed to Portland's
defeat at the hands of San Francisco.
4 to 3. Outhlt almost two to one by
t!te Beavers, the locals ran their bases
like demons, and Just did put across
enough runs to win.
Three of the five passes that "Speck"
Harkness gave were turned Into San
Francisco runs, and the other tally
was started by Olson's bad boot of a
grounder.
It was bang-up baseball from start to
finish, with the Portlanders the most
dangerous kind of competitors. The
Seals had a slim lead of one run in
the fourth, which Portland promptly
tied In the fifth. In the same Inning
the pennant-chasers again went to the
front, and In the seventh made an
other, advancing themselves to the
point that they figured themselves sura
winners.
Ote Johnson was yet to be reckoned
with. There were two on bases when
Johnson banged a Ilonus Wagner drive
to deep center field, clearing the bases,
while he landed at third. Once more the
score was tied, and once mora In the
last of the eighth ZeldT came to the
rescue with a run. Even then the
Seals were not altogether out of the
woods, for Fournter opened with a
two-bagger. He was forced at third
by Kennedy, who batted for Harkness.
and the danger was pretty well over.
Umpire McUreevy ruled with an Iron
hand and no player got the best of
the Indicator man. Catcher lierry was
assessed ti right out of the box for
delaying the game. In the third, when
Zelder was declared safe on a ateal at
aecond. Armbruster made a stormy pro
test. He was ordered out of the game,
finally off the field, and later fined IS.
