BelleTe Action Taken by Railroads

in Interior Is in Jeopardy.
Portland. Pun Francisco. Tacoma and
Seattle commercial bodies are now all in
the fight aga'nst the railroads to secure
better rates .rom Coast pointu to points
In the Interior. At the meeting of the
tran 5 portatlon committee of the Chamber
of Commerce In the new market bulMlr.it
yesterday. It was decided to co-operate
with Tacoma and Seattle in a Joint suit
against the Grea.t Northern and Northern
Pacific on the Question of nir. ftvrm
Tacoma and Seattle to points In Idaho I
end Montana.
Thla ault will be brought before the In
terstate. Commerce Commission and
papers will be dlspatchr-d to Washington
In the course of a few days. It haw
already been announced that the Cham
ber of Commerce will commence suit be
fore the Commission against the O. It.
A K. on the question of distributive rates
out of Portland. In addition. Seattle and
Tacoma commercial bodies have decided
to commence an action against the North
ern 'Pacific before the State Railroad
Commissioners of 'Washington on the
question of local rates. A further action
la promised by the Sain Francisco com
mercial bodies in a meeting yesterday at
Ban Francisco simultaneous with the
meeting at Portland on the whole rate
question from the Pacific Coast to points
In the interior.
AVant Question Decided Altogether.
An endeavor Is to be made to get the
whole Tate question considered at the
same tune and leading towards this end
Portlard will send a special representa
tive to "Washington for the meeting of
the Commission June 9. At the meeting
yesterday, the San Francisco commercial
bodies informed the Portland transporta
tion committee that they would also send
a representative.
The commercial bodies on the Coast are
uranimous In regarding the action taken
by the railroads on the Spokane rate case
as a seejous attack on Coast interests.
It is contended that Eastern jobbers are
enabled to ship their goods to the Coast,
as well as to Spokane and Interior points,
more' cheaply than the Coast Jobbers,
who have less than half the distance to
ship. In an endeavor to ameliorate this
condition. Joint immediate action w-111
be taken.
Kate Still Thought Too High.
The actions of the subcommittee of the
transportation committee for the past
month were confirmed. The committee
has commenced suit before the Railroad
Commission on the matter of rates be
tween Portland and points east of The
Ialles. A reduction was ordered by the
Commission on a previous , suit and is
being contended In the courts by the rail
roads, but the transportation committee
believes the rate ordered by the Commis
sion Is still too high.
As the question of rates from the Coast
to interior points is so entirely one
affecting Coast Interests, it is believed
the Commission will hold hearings in
every important city of the Coast for
the purpose of obtaining evidence, while
a decision may be rendered either at
come Coast point or at 'Washington.
Papers are now in course of prepara
tion and all that have not already been
dispatched to Washington will be iK-nt
in the course of a few days.

KOX-ALCOHOUC
Talk with your doctor about Ayer's non-alcoholic
Sarsaparilla. Ask him if he prescribes it for pale,
delicate children. Ask him if he recommends it
when the blood is thin and impure, and when the
nerves are weak and unsteady. Ask him if it aids
nature in building up the general health.
