C. T. V. I)IS.PPHOVKS Or COITKK AND SIXKKItS." SUPJNYSIDE AFTER FUNDS Close Attention to Technical Educa tion in Work Revealed In Ques tions Instructive Address hy lr. James YVIthycombc. As an indication of the interest thaf i belnff :al-en by young people of Portland In the chicken-raising busineiui. ,Rt night's meeting of the Junior Poultry Association at the Y. M. C. A., was a complete zhiccess. The way in which fhe address of Ir. James "Withy com be. director of tho Oregon Kxperiment Sta tion t Oorvallis. was received by the boys and girls and the questions aked by th-n at Its close plainly indicated that the promoters of tlie association made a happy discovery when they fetarted the organization. Perhaps the most Interesting feature of the merlin was the series of questions aked by the young members regarding tne best breeds to take up. how. larse the Mocks should be, when to set the hens, the cost of feeding and other ques tions that only a quick-witted boy could think of asking. A canvass off the young people present showed that 70 of them have read the nrt lesson in poultry-raising which h furnished by the Agricultural College. Of that number 38 have registered for the contest to be inaugurated in October. From the enthusiasm showed at last night's meeting it is fair to assume that there will be many times that number enrolled when the contest opens. Dr. Withycombe's lecture was tilled m-iih valuable suggestions for the success ful conduct of a chicken-yard, lie also expre.iried the belief that elementary agri culture should be taught in the public schools. This, he said, would not only prove a. restful diversion, but would create an interest in the soil and Its productions. Lr. Wit hycomhe's address was in part as follows: A casual observation reveals a lars;o amuuni of waste ls.nd In the vicinity uf nearly all cities. T'.ila land shouid be utilized and there la perhaps no better way than the keeping; of poultry and tho grnw inr of fruits and vegetables. The organisa tion of the Portland Junior Poultry t'luh is it hopeful s'.sjn that much of this 'and la K-'-tns; to be brought Into profitable use. This v good, not only for the revenue is wll! produce, but also for tho possible habits of Industry and the spirit of relf-rellance It will develop among- the boys. One nf tho problems of urban ltfo is tho satisfactory employment of the boys. Dur ing vacation and outride of school hours tii'y should not bo confined In offices, stores and factories, but should be kept In tho open where they can enjoy tho Invigorating- and wholesome Influence of pure air and sunlight and thus dwveiop a strong pbvvtcal manhood. Tf. j-re In no better way to bung t iis abut than to enlist their intcren in poultry and ysrdmlng. For example, eai. b vacant lot affords sufficient space for a dozen laying hens, ThfM hens, with proper food and care, should yield a nft prortt of t !-at a year. Thia may not s-m large. tut if the thousands of vscnt lot in ihc city were utilised in this way, tre aggregate revenue would amount to a g od detL Vho single hen unit of alue is small, but when we realize that all of the hens In Oregon last year yielded an aggregate revenue of about JS.O0''."1. It seems large. Bol who may not b Interested In poultry may be Induced to take up the growing of vegetables and fruit.
