BT MICHAEL J. DONLW.
Formerly Captain New York National
League team.
Yesterday's name at Recreation Park.
I believe that is what the ball ground Is
called, was really a battle of pitchers, in
which Pernoll outlucked Guyn. and the
visiting Aberdeen team came out vic
torious In a name where one lone run
was the only tally collected In the nine
innines of play.
This youngster, Pernoll. seems to be
something of a pjtcher. for he surely
had everything yesterday and the Port
land batsmen were unable to solve his de
livery successfully. Portland scored three
hits, and, only one of these. Cooney's drive
to left .in. the ninth, was a good healthy
hit. The other two were scratched out
by Murray and Guyn. but went for
naught.
Pernoll, who. I am told, comes from
Southern Oregon, looks likely enough to
be ripe for the big leagues right now. He
has a very effective underhand ball, and
a most deceiving delivery, with very lit
tle motion. I do not believe that he will
remain In this league another season, for
1 doubt if he finishes with Aberdeen, as
some club In the big leagues would he
willing to pay big money for a left-handed
pitcher apparently as reliable as this lad.
Guyn Also Good Twlrler.
Ouyn pitched a splendid game himself,
but as mentioned before, he was slmplv
outlucked by Pernoll. He is a very good
hight-handed pitcher, and should win lots
of games for Casey. Ouyn is a pitcher
who has splendid control and Is not afraid
to use his curve ball when the occasion
demands that he take a chance.
Pernoll. while he won his own game
with a two-base drive, was enabled to do
so through a lucky combination of cir
cumstances. Herbert was the first man
tip in the fifth inning, and he hit one at
Staton. who knocked it down and would
have fielded the batter out at first had he
not sprained his ankle in leaping for the
ball as It bounded in front of him. A sac
rifice hit sent Herbert to second, and
PemoH's long hit scored him after two
were out. The play on which Staton was
injured required quick action, but as he
possesses a fine throwing arm there Is no
reason why he should not have gotten his
man had he not sprained his ankle. Th
boy gamely continued in the game until
he hurt himself while at bat later on.
This necessitated a switch In Casey's line
up. Adams going to third, and Mullln to
right field.
In the ninth Inning things looked de
cidedly bad for Aberdeen. With one out
Cooney singled to left, which hit was the
only legitimate blneel registered off Per
noll. Basm-y proved a good waiter and
worried Pernoll into a pass, and this was
followed by an error by Herbert, which
filled the bases. Manager Casey then did
a wise thing by sending Sheehan. a right
handed batter, to hit In place of Garry,
who bats left handed and who struck out
three times against the left-handed pitch
ing of Pernoll. However. Sheehan waa
called out on third strike, over which
there might have been some question.
Cooney Trie to Steal.
Cooney. who waa on third, then tried
to steal home, while the catcher. O'Brien
waa returning the ball t. Pernoll. and
had he not hesitated a trifle too long, he
might have made It. As it was. O'Brien
threw to Herbert and Cooney was caught
between the third sack and home plate.
After dodging up and down the line for
a time Cooney eluded O'Brien and crashed
for the plate. Julie Streib covered nicely,
but blocked too souarely In the effort to
make the play safe and Cooney's spikes
cut Streib severely Just above the knee,
but the runner was out and the game
ended. Streib says he will play today,
but I doubt it. for cuts like his stiffen
the muscles, and he had better lay off for
a couple of days.
This lad Cooney Impresses me very
much as a ballplayer. He is lithe and
active, while he also hits goo. He should
make his mark in the game., for he pos
sesses a good head and uses fine Judg
ment at all times.
The official score of the game is as
follows:
ABERDEEN.
