tified that lie had reported directly to
"William M. Abbott, general attorney for
the United Railroads, who authorized him
t i engage assistants and paid him. It
was during the trial, he declared. t"hat
he spoke to Patrick Calhoun, who au
thorized him to engage an automobile to
follow Burns, motorcycles having failed
in the work.
Holms said he had induced K. A. Piatt,
a Burns employe, to furnish him with
copies and originals of letters, telegrams
and report, from Herns' office. Abbott,
according to the witness, paid Piatt $JiO
a month from the middle of V-1 until
August 51, l.8. dtiring which time, he
alleged, Platf supplied telegrams in code
