DAUGHTER VISITS HIM Affecting Scene Between Father and Child Portland Attorney Calls to See Prisoner, bat Is De nied Admittance to Cell. " HILLEBORO, Or., May IS. (Special.) John D. Roaelair. self-confessed murderer of his 23-year-old wife, slept little last night. The prisoner knew of the threats to lynch him, and all nlg-ht long trembled In his cell At every sound which sug gested that a mob might be after him. When Sheriff Hancock locked the pris oner in his cell last night he told Rose lair that he was putting a double lock on the Iron door, fearing that an effort might be made by angered citizens to take the prisoner from the J 1 1. At this Roselair expressed much con cern, and walled: "You must protect me! Tou must protect me!" Feeling: against the prisoner was strong last night." and the crowds on the downtown streets discussed the matter until long after midnight. Shortly after o'clock IHstrlct Attorney E. B. Tongue addressed the crowd and urged that they let the law take Its course. The lJIstrlct Attorney told the crowd that the state had strong evi dence agalnxt the prisoner and that conviction was certain. John 11. Ji-ffrey, a Portland attorney, was here this morning and asked to see the prisoner, saying that several of Roselair's countrymen In Portland had called to see him and requested that Jeffrey do what he could for the un fortunate man. Jeffrey was denied an audience with the prisoner. Miss Marie Roselair. daughter of the prisoner by his first wife, arrived today from Sacramento, and was allowed an audience with her father. Roselair was much affected when his child greeted him. Miss Roselair left for Portland in the afternoon. It Is reported here that the mother of the murdered woman will ar rive in the morning from Is Angeles. As yet Roselair has made no Inquiry concerning the wife whom he murdered. It is said that Roselair has expressed a willlngnes to take his punishment, and the state Is believed' to have evidence which will tend to show that Roselair and his wife had had much trouble, and an effort will be made to convict the pris oner of first degree murder. Lrs. F. A. and A. B. Bailey examined Roselair today, and have expressed the opinion that the prisoner Is sound of mind. Roselair Is known to be a man of fiery temperament, and when aroused would act like a madman. FORESTERS TO MEET TODAY Vancouver Will Entertain From All Parts of Washington. VANTOITBR. They say that as a result of this laxity on the part of the agent the tribes have retrograded morally. They especially polnt out the fact that he does not try to prevent the Indians from living with more than one squaw at the same time. Joe Craig. Interpreter, prominent ed ucated Indian and right-hand man of the agent Is designated as a glaring example of a man having more than one wife at the same time. It is al leged that the agent has been appealed to time after time In the case of Craig. and that he has refused to Interfere with the Interpreter. His Red Supporters Few. Incidentally. Craig Is one of three or four Indians who have wired to the department asking for the reinstate ment of McFatridge. While the Indians signing the message are all promi nent, they have not aa large a follow ing as those do who ask for the re moval of the agent. The latter rep resent by far the larger part of the Indians on the reservation- The protesting chiefs do not charge that McFatridge Is bad morally him self, but complain that he shows too much Indifference toward the Improve menl of the Indians and seeks rather to satisfy the whites. McFatridge has received no word as yet from Washington. Two days more and he will be out completely, and McChesney will be in full charge of the reservation office. M'FATRIDGE TO BE REMOVED Hal linger Rerasea to Meed Pleats of Whlt Supporter. OREtrOKIAN NEWS BUREAU. Wash-, tngum. May lg. Though Secretary Bal- linger ha not yet reviewed the record In) the case of Ms)or McFatridge, Indian agent, at Umatilla. Or., it Is reasonably certain that the MaJr mill not be rein stated at his old position, but will be transferred to some other agency where he will have no school problems to handle. Representative KU'.s today conferred with Mr. Balllnger In regard to the case and presented a telegram from I'matilla business men asking tliat the case be held up pendtnar reinvestigation. Mr. Ballln ger took the position that no reinvesti gation is necessary, nor will It be neces sary for Pendleton business men to come to Washington in Major McFatridge s behalf. The action of Commissioner Valentine is not In any way based upon old charges brought against McFatridge. for that mat ter has been cleared up. but Is due en tirely to the agent's direct disobedience of orders given him after the old trouble was adjusted. It Is purely a matter of administration and discipline. Into which other considerations do not enter, and It Is considered necessary. In the interest of the service, to take Major McFatridge from Umatilla. Two telegrams were received by the Indian Office today from I'matilla In dians, one faction urging the retention of Major McFatridge. the other commend ing Mr. Valentine for hit attitude. Neither telegram stated the grounds upon which the recommendation waa made. BAR WIFE AT FUNERAL WOMAN ACCUSED OK AIDING XEttCOMBE IN' RAGE. (Spe cial Investigation of the elrcum staneee surrounding the death at Ited tnond of Louis IL. Worley and Ms four day bride, and the burning of the home, make it seem certain that tne husband first killed bis wife, then set fire to the house, and later went to the barn, where his body was subsequently found, and shot himself. That the man was Insane, and possibly a pervert, also seems evident. Llaht has been shed on the mystery by the finding of a letter on the gate post of J. K. I -smb. a neighbor.
