THE 3IORX1XG OREGONIAN. THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1909. 17 ALLWOQLS ADVANCE Twenty-four Cents Now Of fered for Valley Clip. SHEARING IS COMPLETED Knjcrs Operating Actively in East ern Oregon and Idaho Territory ' Wool Held at High. Prices. Mohair Season Ends. The Valley wool market la keeping pace with the vtrong advance elsewhere. Yester day buyers of the Valley' dip raised their offered price to 24 cents for fine wool, 23 cent for medium and 22 cents for coarse. But little buslneaa was transacted at the advance, howewr. Bhearlng Is about completed In tha Valley, but very llttla wool has came f?rward yt. Where the farmers hav sold, tha clip haa mainly ron Into the muids of country merchants. Burin a ts progressing steadily In nearly all parts of Gaotarn Oregon. Tha demand Is rtrong and tha readiness with which grower are selling Indicates that there will not be enough left for the scheduled sales days to tnaka tha sales a success. Soma dealers es tlnrato that about half the staple wools of the at ate nave been eold. wool cm ring has been heavy lately In the vicinity of Pilot Rock, moat transaction there being at 20 cents. Jame Hackett, for C H. Green, bought, among other cMpa, those of Donald Ross, Mrs. J. I. Luhrs, Glen Luhrs, Douglas Belts, Herbert Boylen and 1. I Mann. Lawrence Sweek, of Monument, sold to Emery his entire crop of wool, con vLstlng of 2660 fleeces, for 20 cent per pound, and states that Mr. Cilery wants all the wool In that vicinity at that price. J. J. Sltnaj also sold 8000 fleeces at the same figure. Further sale have occurred In Idaho at 20 to 21 cents and In all parts of the vVest com petition la keen. In Montana sheepmen are now asking 25 cents and In a. few Instances 28 cents for their clips, but neither figure haa been given, according to late advices For ona special clip of a small quantity running to three-eighths In grade 24 cents waa paid the other day, but, generally speaking, the current range of values Is from 22 to 23 cents. With extreme prlqes demanded In Idaho, soma buyers went Into "Wyoming recently and bought clips In tha Rock Springs section at 21 Va to 22 H cents. Other transactions are being consummated around Rawlins, where the going price touches 23 'cents and even 23 'a cents. Growers in Wyoming ar becom ing excited aa buyers appear more anxious to obtain the new wools, and prices are ad vanced accordingly. tit ah and Nevada are about cleaned up, while new California wools are pract lea 11 y out of the growers hands. Shearing is general In every state but Mon tana, and as the wools of ajl sections have been well culled over by' Eastern men since tha beginning- of contracting, many of the best clips will not be found on tha market at shearing time. closing of the mohair season. IoraJ Trade Handles) Larger Quantity Than Ever Before. The mohair season la nearly at aa end. Oregon dealer this year handled more than ever before. Not less than B30.00O pounds passed through -their hands, of which, how ever, about 100,000 pounds were of last year's dip, A considerable quantity of mohair grown In other states was also marketed here, Aa a mohair market Portland Is growing in Importance. The building of the large mills here will doubtless make Portland the mohair center of the West. Eastern trade papers note a marked Im provement In the mohair goods market, with prices advanced about TVs Pr cent. This rise, which la caused by the higher price of the raw material, has not checked trade ha any way, but has rather stimulated It. In the meantime mohair dealers at Boeton quote the tialr market unchanged, as shown by the following from the Commercial Bulletin; There Is np change In the local situation, manufacturers continuing uninterested la the offerings. Prices. however, are holding nomi nally steady. NEW TORK. May It. There were sen sational features in today's market, but the failure of the general mark to re spond to the extraordinary movements in special stocks was Its most remarkable feature. Spasmodic starts In one stock and another developed In succession, but In the intervals the market lapsed Into dull ness and apathy. Reading was the central figure In the day's dealings and its fluctuations were violent and frequent. It touched new record levels, with the exception of Its rise to 164 in January, 1908. Th first Jump In the nrlcs of Readlna found other favorites of the traders slug gish and unresponsive. When this was cor rected by an aggressive advance in TTnion Pacific. Reading slipped back over th-e whole of Its previous upward course. Then sgain, when Reading was pushed to a new high level. Union PacUc lost all of Its ad vantage, giving the appearance of unavail ing efforts by the supporters of the mar ket to keep the whole llFt moving to gether. Belief that the market was being manip ulated to cover the real nature of the opera tions going on unsettled confidence. Th strike of the French government em ployes was of no apparent influence in the markets. There' was an engagement of 8300,000 In gold bars here for export to Paris tomorrow. The demand for loans Is Increasing, es pecially for fixed periods, and the supply offering Is reported by brokers to be grow ing less. Commercial paper is also grow ing more abundant. Heavy issues of pro posed railroad securities remain to be financed. The call loan branch of the money market remains tranquil. Attention was attracted to an assertion of an influential banker that the specu lative deal in the wheat 'market was financed, not In Chicago, but In, New York. The late tone of tho market waa greatly unsettled and the closing tone irregular. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $7,292,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call.
