Tiere wss no change In the potato situ ation yesterday. Ban Francisco wires noted' a somewhat better feeling, but the market failed to recover from Monday's bad slump. A good many Oregon potatoes are still on the way south and there Is not likely to he any advance In prices In the Bay City this werk. Some potato experts Incline to the opinion that the market has already been at Its best and that prices will do well If they hold their own during the re mainder of the season. A R.-w old Oregon onions are still coming In and It Is said that about 150 sacks are all that are left In the state. The local trade, however, demands new stock. Potatoes Scarce at Albany. ALBANY. Or.. May 11. (Special.) The price of potatoes Is. still soaring In Albanv. It has reached $1.60 per bushel, which equals the highest price ever paid for po tatoes In this city. Three or four local grocery stores have no potatoes at all on hand and others have very few. Jt Is esti mated that there are not more than 100 bushels In Albany In the hands of retail dealers. The present weather Is un favorable for the rapid development, of this year's crop and new potatoes- will probably not be on the market her before the middle of July. STRATVBERKY SHIPMENTS DELATED. Part of Hold-Over Stork Condemned by Market Inspector. The delaved train service resulted In a bare strawberry market, except for the hold-over stock and the few Oregon berries that came In. The latter sold at 12 i cents a pound and the California berrlea went for whatever they would bring. Some of the California fruit was In such poor condition that the market Inspector "coal oiled" a quantity of 'it. Last night's large shipment will he put en sale this morning and If today's ex press Is on time there will be a double quantity to dispose of. What success the Jobbers meet with will depend on weather conditions. Two steamers brought a good assortment of vegetables, which cleaned up well at steady prices. LACK OF DEMAND FOR WHEAT. Seme California Holders Are Selling Grain at m Ixss. There Is a lack of animation In the lo eal wheat markot. The principal demand lately has come from California and now that this has subsided, trade Is decidedly dull. With the cessation of the Southern Inqulry come reports that California dealers have turnod sellers, some of them letting ge of club wheat around 11.17. There Is no pressure to sell on this market, how ever, and former prices are atlll quoted. Barley and oats are quiet and firm. I-oi-al receipts. Sudden Rise in Reading; Affects the General List and Closing Ton Is Strong. NEW YORK, May 11. The lethargic con dition Into which speculatlr.a in stocks fell today was difficult to account for. The apparent completion of selling from quar ters that were regarded as Important gave some relief to an apprehension that in formed Interacts were liquidating their holdings of stocks. Orders from London slso were on the buying side in excess of selling orders from that source. Foreigners often are well Informed on the views of Interests controlling the great corporations here, and the persistent selling of late has been considered rather ominous. The re sult of that condition today with the clos ing up of accounta In connection with the stock market movement " in London was accepted as cause for encouragement. The market was freed from the selling pressure In evidence yesterday, but prices moved decisively upward only in the final half hour. Dealings fell to a lower rate of activity during the midday period than has been witnessed In New York for over two months.. Effectual support was af forded by the sympathetic influence of strength In a few stocks, notably Reading. That stock met some very heavy selling orders In the course of the advance, but offered good resistance. Erie was strong and estimates of the increase in that road's earning power were put In circulation. The stirring of the market for the Erie was believed to foreshadow the offering of ad ditional securities. Incident to financing the road's further needs. Part of the effect of depression In activity was due to the renewed rise in the price of wheat. The tuVn to the buying side In the stock market on the part of London Increased the supply of foreign exchange today and took away from yesterday's show of firm ness In that market. The stock market sentiment Is not disposed to Ignore the significance of the hardening of the money market in view of the free use which haa been made of banking credits in carrying prices of securities up to the present price levels. The buoyant upshoot In Reading at the last awakened the general market to only a moderate animation, but the closing tone was strong. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, $4. 682,000V United States bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. ClOPing Sales? High. Low. Bid. PIT, THEREFORE, BULLISH Crop Xews From the Southwest Adds to the Strong Tone Caused by Steady Cables Decrease in the World's Visible' Supply. CHICAGO, May 11. Sentiment In the wheat pit was bullish all day and the vol ume of trade was fairly large. The failure of foreign markets to follow the slump here yesterday imparted a strong tone at the opening, which was augmented by unfa vorable crop reports from the Southwest, particularly from Western Kansas and Ne braska. Advices from Kansas were contradictory, but the trade seemed inclined to look on the dark side. A dispatch from a cordage concern at St. Louis, claiming that many orders for twine had been cancelled owing to poor outlook for the new crop In Kan sas, Oklahoma and Texas, waa one of Oia reports that startled the trade. An enorm ous decrease In the world's visible supply of wheat, as outlined In Bradstreet's state ment, also helped to Inspire bullish senti ment. According to this authority, the total available decreased 33,741.000 bushels during April, leaving the supply now at 136.844.000, which- is almost the smallest on record. Local contract stocks in public elevators decreased 3,311.000 bushels last week and are now only 3,123,000 bushels. During the day July sold between $1.12 and $1.14 and closed at $1.14. Shorts were active bidders for corn and the market displayed a strong tone. Cash corn at the sample tables was cent higher, but there was little offered. The corn market closed strong, final quotations showing net gains of c to c compared with yesterday's close, with July at 68 69c. Sentiment in the oats pit was bullish. During the day July ranged between 51 o and 51 c At the close prices were up o to c compared with the previous close with July at 51 e. Provisions were strong all day. Closing prices showed net gains of 1012c to 10c. WHEAT. Onen.
