THE MORNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY, MAY 10, 1909.
THREE CAMPS ARE
TO OPPOSE
Kellaher Will Run as Indepen
dent, and Munly Will Be
Backed by Democrats.
ALBEE MAY ENTER RACE
SIcCusker Faction Hopes to Bring
Out Iatter, but Friends of Regu
lar Party Nominee Are Con
fident of Victory.
Not less than three forces, each op
posed to Simon, already are at cross
purposes In their anxiety to pit some
one candidate against the choice of the
Republican primary election. Demo
crats, having nominated Judge Munly,
would concentrate all of the anti-Simon
strength on their candidate. Dan Kel
laher declared yesterday that he would
be an independent candidate for Mayor,
and is said to be depending on Rush
light's friends to boost his candidacy
as the proper man to gro up against
tflmon.
Tom McCusker and his associates pro
pose to bring- out State Senator H. R.
Albee to oppose the Republican nomi
nee, and they are so confident that
Albee is the only man who can meas
ure up to the job that they probably
will refuse to accept either Kellaher or
Munly. That is the way the Mayoralty
situation looms up. Each of the three
wants the other two camps to abdicate
and unite on the candidate of its own
choosing.
Speaking for the Democrats. George
H. Thomas, chairman of the City Cen
tral Committee, yesterday said the
Democrats expected to conduct a vigor
ous campaign and devote their efforts
towards organizing all of the antl
Slmon forces under the Munly banner.
Would Center on Munly.
"If the forces standing for improved
conditions in government are sincere
and really wish to defeat Simon, and
want to maintain Statement No. 1 and
the primary law, they have for their
guidance the results of yesterday's pri
mary election," said Chairman Thomas.
"A divided opposition means defeat.
Judge Munly has already been nomi
nated in opposition to Joseph Simon,
and he was nominated under the pri
mary law. Now, upon what logical
grounds will any earnest citizen op
posed to Joseph Simon refuse to vote
lor Judge Munly?" w
"I certainly shall be an independent
candidate for Mayor in June," said Sen
ator Kellaher yesterday. "I expect
within a few days to issue a formal
letter to the voters, explanatory of my
candidacy and the platform on which
I will ask their support. I shall make
n active campaign, and believe I have
a good chance to win."
The Kentucky Kllck voiced Its com
plete satisfaction in the nomination of
Judge Munly for Mayor on the Demo
cratic ticket by issuing the following
congratulatory message, addressed to
the Portland Democracy:
The Kentucky Kllck congratulates the
Democracy of Portland upon the triumphant
nomination of .Tudse Munly for the Mayor
alty. The Klick rejoices in the similarity
of the political sltuntion this year and that
of two and four years affo, when, through
Its "friends' in the Republican party, it
succeeded In nominating- weak Republican
candidates for Mayor and It is certain that
the Democrats are destined to have another
"Cake" in the approaching; June election.
- Republicans Are Elated.
Republicans generally are elated
with the result of the primary election.
Success of the assembly ticket, with
only two exceptions, will be ratified at
a gathering of Republicans in the Sell-ing-Hirsch
building Wednesday night.
Details of this Jollification are In the
bands of the officers of the Republican
Club. Invitations have been extended
alike to the successful and defeated
candidates, and all Republicans who
believe in party organization and ef
fort, party activity and the election of
the complete ticket nominated Satur
day, to attend.
Supporters of Mr. Simon do not regard
with any degree of seriousness the re
port that the Republican nominee chosen
In the primary election will be opposed
m June by any Independent Republican
candidate or candidates'. They feel that
the decisive majority recorded for Mr,
Simon Saturday In itself should operate
very effectively to discourage independ
ent candidacies. Reference to the com
plete unofficial returns, published in The
Bunday Oregonian. shows that Mr. Simon
received a majority over all of SS7, while
his plurality over Rushlight reached
23S1. The complete unofficial vote for
Mayor, as compiled by The Oregonian,
was: Bailey. 319; McDonell, 1355; Rush
light, S:-"7; Simon, 5S0S.
The anti-assembly forces', while aver
ring that they will not lie down, admit
frankly that the best time to have put
Mr. Simon out of the way was In the
primary election. They do not undertake
to deny that the ex-Senator has been
regularly nominated as the Republican
nominee for Mayor, while the man they
were supporting, not with any great en
thusiasm, was a poor second in the pre
liminary skirmish.
l.ane No longer Considered.
Political gossip Is agreed that the
nomination of Judge Munly for Mayor
by the Democrats In preference to Lane
eliminates the latter as a Mayoralty pos
sibility. This te a result entirely agree
able to the Republicans and to many
Democrats. The Republicans are satis
fied because I-ane admittedly was re
garded by them as the strongest Demo
crat that could be matched against
Simon. Members of Lane's own party
have no complaint to make since they
were ready to take chances with almost
any other candidate. Neither side places
any credence In the report that Lane
will yet be brought into the contest as
an independent candidate. They are
willing to consider that Lane has gone
Into political seclusion until state politics-
begin to stir next year, when he is
expected to go after his party's nomina
tion for Governor.
Friends of the Republican ticket that
has been nominated expect to do every
thing within their power to pacify the
party membership and rally all party
voters to the support of every nominee
In the June election. At the same time
they profess not to be alarmed over the
reported independent candidacy of Dan
Kellaher. unattached, and H. R. Albee.
choice of the antl-ass-jmbly element.
With Munly barked by the Democratic
strength and Kellaher and Albee divid
ing the anti-Simon following, the friends
of the ex-Senator feel confident they will
carry the day In the June election.

holders by whom he could swear his vote
in, McDonell was further chagrined for
the reason that he could find only three
such citizens. But time is precious to a
candidate for public office, especially on
election day, and he finally gave the
task up and proceeded to look after his
candidacy In other precincts. About the
only consolation Mr. McDonell can gain
from his inability to vote' is the fact that
one vote either way would not very ma
terially have changed the result of Sat
urday's election.

PRINCE RUPERT, B. C.
The first sale of Prince Rupert lots will be held at

Trunk Pacific Railway. The sale will be held in the
interests of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company
and the Government of British Columbia; half of the
lots offered being owned by each party. From 2000
to 2400 lots will be offered.
The sale will be held by auction and the terms of
payment will be one-quarter cash and the balance in
one, two and three years, with interest at six per cent.

parties shall meet within five days fol
lowing the primary election and effect
an organization. Permanent organiza
tion of the Republican committee will be
formed at tonight's meeting, which, it
is expected, will be attended by every
member of the committee.
It is the purpose of the Republican
committee to conduct an active campaign
preceding the municipal election June 7,
that the election of the entire ticket nom
inated Saturday may be assured. The
details of such a campaign will be out
lined at the meeting tonight and other
business properly concerning the party
organization will be transacted.
The Democrats also are planning an
active campaign in support of Judge
Munly's candidacy for Mayor. Chair
man Thomas said yesterday that he did
not consider it was compulsory under the
direct primary law for the party to hold
a meeting and effect an organization, and
for that reason it is probable that the
minority party will prosecute Its cam
paign under its1 present organization.
