J. PETRAIN. After winning eight straight games from the OaJUand bunch, Portland col lapsed yeeterday, and by virtus of the fine pitching; of George Bodce, the com muters got away with the long- end of a 6-to-l score at the Vaughn-street lot. Incidentally it was ladies" day and the exceptionally largre gathering of femi ninity might possibly have had Just the least bit to do with the case of stage fright experienced by the home team In the sixth inning. Anyhow, Hugh McCredie. who had a grouch on yesterday, said Portland has won only two ladies' day games In the history of the league in Portland, and he would be willing to cut out this day were It not for the fact that Walter and the iudge will not stand for It. For Ave innings, Young Seaton, who was sent In to slab it for the home Tuard, closed the Oaks out without a. hit 3r a run. During this time, however, he showed signs of wildness and after two runs were put over on him in the sixth, and he walked the first man up In the seventh. MoCredie brought out his derrick and shifted Walter Gough to the mound. The damage had been done previous to the advent of the row man, but he con tributed a couple of costly errors and forced a run over the plate with a bas on balls, so the switch really worked no particular good. Game Is Won in Sixth. With Boice pitching in grand form, tt soon developed that one or two runs would win the game, and when Oakland put the. two over on Seaton in the . sixth, the game was stowed away in Van Hal tren'e pocket. Portland's only run came in the fourth, when hits by MoCredie and Johnson, and Breen's bunt on a hit ,and run play with the tall manager on third, scored the first and only Portland tally of the game. In the sixth. Murphy led off with a single. McCay dumped a sacrifice at Johnson, but Kennedy muffed the throw and both hands were safe. Van Haltren advanced both men with a sacrifice, and Happy Bill Hogan biffed one to right, scoring both men Seaton walked Carroll in the seventh, and MoCredie chased .him. calling in . Gough. The new pitcher threw the ball away trying to catch Carroll off first, and the Oaklander went to second. Gough then fanned Truesdale, but followed this by walking La Longe Boice singled over second, scoring Carroll, and Murphv was safe on Kennedy's error. This filled the bases. McCay filed to Breen. but Van Haltren was passed, forcing in La Longe. Hogan flew to McCredie, ending the inning. Cough's error. Carroll's sacrifice. Duffy Lewis' eteal of third and Truesdale'o lucky hit to right gave the Oaks the fifth and last, run in the eighth. Murphy. McCay and Van Haltren singled In suc cession, the last two beating out bunts in the ninth, put three Oaklanders' on and none down in that inning, but Gough rallied nicely and disposed of Hogan. Duffy Lewis and Carroll in order. Happy iHogan s fielding of the, third bag position, and Truesdale s one-handed stop of a hot grounder were the fielding features. The same teams play today and "Speck" Harkness will oppose Slim Nel son. Official Score or Game. COONEY GETS IN BUNTS Plnnance Is Steady, hut Fails to Land as Many Strtke-onts as Wright for Indians Close De cision on Portland's Ron. SPQKAyB, Wash.. April 30. Special.) Not a fielding error marred the defensive work of Spokane and Portland today, and there were some sensational stops and catches to make the perfect fielding all the more remarkable. There were only four battery errors on each, side, and only one of them costly. Two of the. three runs were cleanly earned. Not a stolen base against the' perfect work of both catchers and all the hitting was harp and clean, considering that on both of Cooney's two perfect 6afe bunts there was not a chance to catch the speed wonder, although one play looked dose. Both Wright and Plnnance pitched mag nificent ball. Wright earning his victory because the Indians found the ball oftener and for longer drives. Except for a hair line decision at first base, Portland would have been shut out. Wright disposed of ten by the airline route, getting Captain Casey three times and every man on the Portland team at least once excepting Cooney and Pinnance. Pinnnnce did not land so many strikeouts, faced fewer bat ters and the six hits aggregated a much larger total bases, yet he vis remark ably steady, and might have shoved the game into extra inlngs but for his one base on. balls that was cashed into a run.
