POTATOES ARE HIGH And Will Be Higher Before Sea son, Ends. . BUYERS NOW PAYING $1.75 Jerry Cousins' Opinion of the Out look , for the Market Wheat Held Firmly Wool Trad ing in the West. Potato, have taken another Jump. Port ana dealer, are offering; $1.75 per hundred In the country and have bought a number of car. at thla price. With tho sumly much reduced and the end of the season some distance off. there Is every Indication that still higher prices will yet prevail. Jerry Cousins, -who 1s as well posted on potatoes as any one. figures out a very strong market position. There are not over ISO cars left Jn all hands In Oregon." he said yesterday. "Port land uses old potatses until July, as long aa they are In merchantable condition,, more so than any other city on the Coast. The needs of Portland are four cars a day. and this will leave a surplus of only 25 cars. "Alaska will want In the neighborhood of or -3 c"-r the best potatoes for ship ment between May 15 and June 20. Yak ima will probably nil the bill, as they are too large and In poor shape. "San Francisco and Oakland could take all the potatoes left in this state with ease That these markets will continue to buy hera la certain. "Only 800 cars are left in Colorado and none can be spared for the Southern Cali fornia markets. The demand on Colorado from markets in that territory is too large to be filled, Kansas City alone wanting 600 cars. The result le that Los Angeles Is now bnylng Rivera at Stockton and paying l.T5l.0 per hundred for them. Potatoes are worth BO a ton. in British Columbia and that section is also buying California Rivers, while the Seattle market In a week or ten days will be on a parity with San Francisco. "With fiverv Mrtlnn n-t . ... - -. . auU IQB QB- ... u. uriguo potatoes so strong it is likely the supply here will give out before the season is over, and Portland may have to buy some of the potatoes back. "If the shortage here becomes acute and It Is necessary to bring potatoes from the East. It will be found they will cost In the tielKhborhood of 24 to 2 ',4 cents. All the Eastern markets are high. At Chicago potatoes are selling at l.20l.S0 per bush el and at St. Paul at $1.10 1.15 per bushel Other markets In these sections are high in proportion. WOOL CONTRACTING IX THE WEST Bluer. Taking- All That Is Offered in Montana. The wool season Is opening at strong prl. es In all parts of the West. In Mon tana crops are being bought on the sheep's back whenever obtainable at 21 to 22 cents rut It Is authoritatively stated that nothing ahove 22 cents has been received by grow ers since 23 cents was realized a few weeks ago for one exceptionally fine clip. It is said that the test wools are about all bought In the state, and growers are not disposed to part with the remaining clips except at full prices. Of the new Utah wool fully 05 per cent has been already sold on contract. In Wyo ming very choice wools are being held by grower, in spite of recent bids of 21 cents, but this action by tha sheepmen of that state occasions no surprise, for they are tisually willing to take a chance on the future market, as well as are the dealers. Cold weather la delaying shearing in the state. Western Idaho wools, which, are generally excellent, are being contracted for at 20 cents. WHEAT RAXES MA OK AT FILL PRICES Offer of $1.1T for Red Russian I. Turned Down. The change yesterday for the better in the Bastera wheat market, like the decline of last waek, had Mttla or no effect on the local market. Prtoes here, because of the strong demand and evident shortage, are on an ex ceedragly firm basU aad slowly but aure.y tcadlng upward. This was ahown yesterday by ?he refusal of an offer of $t.lT for rtd Rusaan club wheat, which Is more plentiful than an ether variety and oa whloh the ptjiclpal efforts were made -o depress rrlcas. AT DECLINE Ens Are Firm, but Poultry Is Blow and Weaker. The decline In the city butter market to 27 cents was acceptable to some of the creameries, but others were still short of the necessary supply. Outside creamery was weak on Front street, fresh stock being offered aa low aa 24 Y cents. There were no receipts of cheese and the market was strong at last .prices. Eggs were firm on the street, with most sales reported at 25 cents. Some of the larger operators are withdrawing from the market, considering the pries too high for thla time of year. The poultry market showed more of a dragging tendency and HI cents was quoted as top o-i hens IOOB WEATIItR FOR STRAWBERRIES Receipt, of th. Iay Are Fortunately IJght Apples From. California. NEW YORK, April 27. The halting and Irregular price Vinovement in the stock market today augured speculative uncer tainty. The subsidence in activity extended to the bond market, and the tone there -.vas rather heavy as well, whh none of the rapid absorption going on that was In' evidence last week. The liquidations indicated that the prospect of some curtailment of the redundant money supplies wa. the cause of the slowing up in the pace of the spec ulation. The call loan market is but little affected, but the facility with which cred it, can be obtained for speculative use is modified nevertheless. ' United States Steel was firm on account of the general conjecture that the quarterly i report of the earnings of the firet three ' months of the year, to be published after I the tn nrV.f , . , . v., wuulu ranKB a ravoraliln contrast with the preceding- quarter, and especially would be better than suppositions current some, time since. The estimates current during the day of the earnings to be reported ranged from f21.0O0.0O0 to over $22,000,000. and as the actual report gives the amount as $22,921,268, the accuracy of the information on which operations were based may be Judged. The iron and steel industrials were helped also by reports of locomotive orders Issued from several of the large railroad systems. The report was also current that the Car negie company has advanced the price of bars for plates, but the report lacked con flrmatioa and was met by denials from some quarters. The metal stocks other than Steel and tne smelting Issues were weak and off-et the influence of the otherwise Arm tone of United States Steel. The decline in Reading also had Its usual strong influence on the market, "he belief that a settlement of a wage agreement with the anthracite miners was lmminet t failed to help the stock.
