BERG GETS F FULLS BUT LOSES O'Connell Wins as Opponent Is One -Half Pound Over Weight at Noon. BIG CROWD SEES MATCH Multnomah Instructor Goes to Mat Four Times In 54 Minutes and 20 Seconds, but Prevents Re quired Fifth Fall. BT W. J. PETRAIN. Because ho was a fraction of a pound over weight at noon yesterday, according to the announcement of Referee Michael J. Dwyer, of Chicago, John Berg, better known as Toung Hackenschmldt, lost his handicap wrestling match to Instructor Bddlo O'Connell, though ho tossed the lighter man four times In 54 minutes and 2) seconds at the Exposition Rink last night. According to the articles of agreement between the two men. Berg agreed to make 165 pounds at noon on the day of the match, and if he welched more than that he would be required to throw O'Connell five times instead of four. The referee made an announcement to this effect, and Informed the big crowd present that Berg weighed 165 and a fraction pounds at the required hour, which necessitated his tossing the smaller man the extra fall. That he did not accomplish this task was plainly due to the handicap he was under by reason of his bad leg, which went back on him Immediately after he had downed O'Connell the second time, when, on leaving the ring, he walked with a noticeable limp. Match Is Fast One. However, despite Berg's handicap, the match was a hummer and both men were compelled at all times to exert their utmost ingenuity and to bring into play all their wrestling knowledge. While It was a handicap match, and these are not aa popular as bouts between men of equal weight, there were features to last night's bout which will make it one of the matches to be remembered. The gameness of both men was apparent throughout, on the part ot O'Connell, because of the superior weight and strength of his opponent, and Berg be cause of his persistency n following up the more agile little man despite his lame ankle. Even the preliminary, wherein Con Al bright, who issued another defy to 0OonneIl, showed the fans present what he could do by disposing of "Kid" Parker in less than ten minutes, was all that could be asked at any wrestling match. Albright showed wrestling knowledge, while Parker can scarcely be said to have learned the rudiments of the game, and his defeat at the hands of the Roch ester man will probably lessen his anxiety to meet O'Connell. Immediately after Albright had disposed of his man so handily. Referee Dwyer announced the main event and Intro duced the principals. Both men were received with cheers, O'Connell naturally sharing the greater portion of the ap plause because he was better known to the crowd. The referee then explained the conditions of the match and when it was announced that Berg would be re quired to throw O'Connell five times In stead of four in one hour of actual wrestling, the crowd wondered at the switch, for the majority of them were unfamiliar with the forfeit required by failure of Berg to make the stipulated weight. First Fall In Three Minutes. The rival wrestlers soon got down to business, and Berg showed his class al most as soon as he grappled the local wrestling Instructor. He secured the upper hold almost Immediately and after three minutes of fiddling about for a hold he finally fastened a half-Xelson and body hold on his opponent. By exerting ! his great strength he placed O'Connell's shoulders to the mat clearly and Ref eree Dwyer gave him the fall and an nounced the time as three minutes. The quickness and dispatch with which the pupil of the "Russian Lion" disposed of O'Connell In the Initial, fall startled the many admirers of the latter for the time being. O'Connell entered the arena for the second fall with a confident smile. This bout went 12 minutes, but, like the earlier fall. Berg's superior strength and knowl edge of wrestling resulted in the Inevita ble, and O'Connell's shoulders went to the mat In 12 minutes and 20 seconds by practically the same tactics as were used In the first encounter. The third fall was the longest of the match and lasted 24 minutes. During this bout Berg was plainly ill at ease because of his lame leg, and O'Connell's tactics of squirming away from him and getting off the mat continually kept the big fellow worried. O'Connell proved himself shifty and both men were sweat ing freely, making it difficult for Berg to hold the shifty O'Connell. The toe hold finally accomplished O'Connell's third downfall, when the husky Berg fastened this dangerous grip on the lit tle man and with a headlock in com bination scored the third fall. This left but 20 minutes and seconds to accom plish the required two falls to bring victory to the former Belllnghom boy. Berg Makes Final Effort. Fifteen minutes were necessary for the fourth fall, 'and when Berg went on the mat for his final effort he said that he hardly expected to win because O'Connell could keep away from him long enough to consume the- remaining five and a frac tion minutes. During this short time Berg rushed matters and tried hard to nail O'Connell to the mat, but the shifty little man succeeded in eluding him most of the time, and also managed to squirm out of three holds which might have brought victory to Hack had he been able to maintain them. When the timekeeper announced that the hour was up. Berg was working hard to get O'Connell on his back, and for several seconds after the end was an nounced, the two men struggled n the mat, not having heard the call of time because of the pandemonium which reigned during this exciting portion of the contest. After the bout was over the two men shook hands and the crowd departed. Manager Campbell, on behalf of Con Albright, issued the following challenge to O'Connell: "Albright will wrestle O'Connell at the welter-weight limit. 146 pounds, winner take all and will post a side bet of $500, or will wrestle O'Connell at catchweights for a limited side bet, and any other ar rangements as to- the division of the re ceipts acceptable to the latter." O'Connell is believed to favor a match with Akbrlght. and will probably arrange to meet him after his n-xt mutch, which is said to be scheduled with Dan Sulli van. In the meantime Albright is pre pared to take on "trangler" Smith in the event that O'Connell take on Sulli van before giving him a match. Los Angeles 38; Chemawa 17. CH EM AW A. Or.,- Feb. IS.
