SAYS TO URD THOUGHTS RIDDELTi DELIVERS TJTTRD X.KC TTKE OF HIS SERIES. "Brain Building and Soul Growth" Is Subject and rower of Sugges tion Is Dwelt On. "Bran Building: "-nd Soul Growth" was the tlUe of the third lecture in the ncrles being .given by Newton N. RlddeU on applied psycholosy. The two previous lectures were riven in the "White Temple, but this was Riven In the First Presby terian Church, to accommodata iBilly Sunday. The speaker dwelt upon the Importance of suggestion in character and brain bufldlng and declared that if half of the books were burned and most of the plays of the present day were suppressed there would be less evil In the world; that their influence Is most harmful. The Increase in crime anions; Juveniles in America is two and one-half times as large as the Increase In crime among adults and two and one-half times as fast in proportion to the normal popula tion, said the speaker. Many illustra tions were presented to show how lack of concentration enables wrong habits to develop. A number of experiments made by Professor Elmer Gates In the development of perception in animals were described. -Every bad habit." said Mr. RlddeU. "can be eliminated, every nature can be improved by suggestion. By this means man can free himself from heredi tary tendencies and can enter the higher Christian life. Ribt thinking In early life means better thinking throughout Ufa. Wrong desires, wrong emotions, wrong thinking in youth make a wrong life Inevitable. No man lives any more wisely from having lived wrongly in early Ufe. . "Thoughts are things and when ort repeated or persisted in become embodied in nerve cells and form an inteirral part of the man. Through brain building and auto-suggestion wonderful changes may be wrought in the natural man; but every man to reach his best must be born of the Spirit The higher life of the king dom of Christ is attained, not by brain building and soul growth, but by trans mutation from the lower to the higher plan through the forgiveness of sin and the regenerative power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore the place to begin all charac ter building and higher living is on Cal ary." Tonight Mr. RlddeU will .speak on "Psychlo and Spiritual Phenomena." TO EXPAND WATER SYSTEM Cottage Grove Business Men Pro pose Expenditure of $150,00 0. COTTAGE GROVE. Or, Feb. . (Spe cial.) Need for an enlarged water sys tem was discussed at a meeting of the Commercial Club last night. A number of plans were outlined, but the pre vailing sentiment was in favor of bring ing the water from Lang Creek, which would require 22 miles of pipe. This would' cost from $125,000 to $150,000 and would furnish ample supply for a city of at least 20,000 population. The present revenue is $6000 a year, and by being able to supply fully the requirements it was contended that the revenues would almost double the pres ent Income. An auxiliary pumping plant was also discussed, but did not meet with much favor. Lang Creek is in the Government re serve east of here, and is supplied from the snowcapped peaks of the Bohemia Mountains. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, Feb.
