Tillamook Factories Are
Closed Down.
OWING TO BAD ROADS
Local Tralc for a Time AVII1 Ilare
to Depend on Storage Supplies.
Illeh Prices Are Offered
for Vilicat.
New cheese has tcora a "T sesree
article and the market Is likely to be en
tirely bare of It fir a considerable tlmo
to come. The factories at Tillamook are
not making anything because the roads In
that section are In such condition that they
can do no haullrg. There Is no prospect,
therefore, of getting any r.ew rhe-e from
that place for 10 days. JoIbrs and others
re compelled to draw upon storage stocks,
for which the demand has suddenly be
come strong. The inquiry, however, at the
present time Is entirely local, there being but
little disposition on the part of outsWle
markets to use Oregon chese. Prices have
not been change!.
Butter is quoted all the way from 3 to
89 cents with the bu:k of business at 37
cents, which appears to he the current
market value. The undertone, however. Is
aid to be easier, as stocks are accumulat
ing1 In some quarters.
mf.H TRICES OFFERED FOR WHEAT.
Blnestrm and Aln flub Are In Demand.
Oats Mrom In Country.
Firmness prevailed In nearly all the
grain markets yesterday. In the wheat
market the demand was good for both
bluestem and club. A sale of bluestem at
tl.OS was reported. This price was offered
for a large lot and an offer of II 08 was
also made. There were offers as high as
tt cents for good milling club.
There Is a steady inquiry from Cali
fornia for oats at better prices than of
fered rervntlv. but they do not come up
to the figures cun-ent here. In fact, the
local market Itself Is under the Interior
market and as result very few oats are
coming this wk. The receipts of oats
for the week to date have been only eight
cars and last week only three cars ar
rived. Barley is steady with a moderate
local demand.
There Is much Interest in the prohable
movements of the British steamer Katanga,
now at ManzanlUo. Mexico, and lifted for
thl port. It has been known for some time
that she was chartered to take out a wheat
cargo and lt Is now bclievod her destination
will be Mexico.
Bid and asked prices were posted at the

man, of Forest Grove; 49 bales from Frank
Meyer, of Eugene; .".S bales from L. I-. Gray,
of Dayton, and SO bales from a Eugene

The general aspects of the market remain
unchanged. Orowers take a bullish view of
the future and are not ready sellers, where
as the demand Is of satisfactory propor
tions, though most of the late buying has
been entirety for American account.
FRESH PRODl'CE MOVING BETTER.
Supplies Are Not Heavy and Prices Are
Firm.
There was a very g"-d demand for vege
tables of all k!ni yesterday and a sun;iirs

There wu a better demand for ccpa yce

able that the decline has been temporarily
checked. Prices quoted on the street ranged
from 37i to 40 cents, with some c!ean-up
business said to have been done at 37 cents.
There was a moderate inquiry for poultry

Money and Exchange Markets.
Bonds Are Irregular.
NEW TORK. Jan. 20. There was per
ceptible growth today of the disinclination
to deal in stocks, which has been increas
ing for several days past. The first hour
of the session showed a spurt of activity
which seemed to be due to hopeful test
ing operations by the professional clement.
With the failure of those efforts to arouse
any Interest or to attract any following,
the market lapsed Into neglect and at times
Into stagnancy with another little flurry of
activity In the final hour.
Today the New York Central directors ad
journed once mono with the announcement
that only routine matters had been con
sidered. This puts off again the supposed
entry of Harrlman and associates into the
directorate, which has been said to be im
minent many times.
A decline In Amalgamated Copper was
the response to the reports of unfavorable
conditions in the copper trade. Except in
special cases, the day's changes proved in
significant. Affairs were almost as much
at a standstill In the money and exchange
markets as In stocks.

John Burroughs Says Millionaires
Are Unhappy.
TrwAi-A. N. T.. Jan. 20. John Bur
roughs, the naturalist, who la visiting
here, believes that few millionaires are
really happy- He is quoted In an inter
view as follows:
"I do not believe In the doctrine attrib
uted to John D. Rockefeller, that If you
want to make your wife happy all you
have to do is to give her plenty of money.
I do not believe the possession of money
and happiness are aynonymous. If Mr.
Rockefeller Bad Deen quoted correctly, he
Is making: a declaration that I belleVe
American women and women all over the
world will resent. They want love first of
all if they are provided with the right in
stincts. "I eat behind Jay Gould in school and
once he wrote a composition on a slate for
me when I needed Ideas. That day he
needed 70 cents, and I gave the sum to
him for two old schoolbooks. I eaw him
later In life when he was worth $70,000,000,
but I do not think he was happy. The
money fire was blazing In his eyes and I
am sure lt reached his brain and consumed
his life, sending him to an untimely
grave.
"The great problem of today is the
making of money. It is unquestionably
the occupation that engages the minds of
the vast majority of people. But from
what I have seen of life and those leading
it, when one has obtained a competency
money is superfluous, just like an excess
of what Is not needed to round out the
figure and give lt a handsomer appear
ance. Piling up wealth then becomes like
piling on flesh and greatly hinders the en
joyment of the best things of this life.
"I know millionaires and know very few
happy ones. True, Mr. Carnegie seems to
be an exception because he is different
from many other rich men. He is trying
to get rid of his money and he takes a
keen delight in doing good with It

CHICAGO. Jan. 20. The feature of trade
In the wheat pit today was the congestion
In the May delivery, which resulted at
times in a highly nervous market. Sen
timent in the pit. however, was decidedly
bullish, and at the close prices were almost
at the highest point. Small receipts In
the Northwest formed the basis of much
of the strength, although the light move
ment was partially offset by a decline in
the price of wheat at Liverpool. A leading
commission house was reported to have
purchased more than 1.000.000 bushels of
the May delivery during the day, and this
buying caused an advance of 1 cent for
that option from the low point of the ses
sion. Other deliveries showed less strength.
