day rendered a verdict in favor of the
dufendant. The property coimlsts of
town lots. Sheridan said he was en
titled t. the land by reason of a grant
as a subsidy in building a railroad. The
Southern Pacific asserts that the rail
mad acquired title to the land from fTie
S(reckels Brothers of Sjn Krancisco in
connection with a railroad deal.
It 1 probable that Sheridana attor
neys will take steps to secure
trial.
Well's Hearing Continued.
Meier Well, promoter of a get-rich-qulck'
scheme, appeared before United
States Commissioner Marsh yesterday
afternoon to resist extradition to New
Mexico, the scene of alleged depreda
tions. Well had a method of high finance
that was Just next door to burgfary. He
would send East to a big wholesale
house and order a quantity of goods in
the name of some small Western retail
house. When these goods would arrive he
would palm himself off as representative
of the company, get the goods by merely
paying the freight charges and proceed
to sell ttiem. No institution on earth
could meet his prices. His lost offense
was committed at Roswell. X. M.. andH
naturally he doesn't want to go back.
The hearing was taken up and continued
to February S.

Potentate I G. Clarke, of the Al Kader
Temple. Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of
the Mystic Shrine, sprang the proposi
tion of. a new temple for the order in
Portland.
The enthusiasm with which the plan
was received, and the selection of such
well-known bumness men as H. P.
Palmer. W." C. Bristol. H. P. Beckwlth,
J. U. Mack and H. I Plttock, is an as
surance of the stability of the project.
Something unique and beautiful is
promised in the way of an edifice, some
thing which may in Its beauty furnish
an analogy to the Cathedral at Stras
bourg, or possibly even the world-famed
Taj Mahal, of India. The plan is to
secure a site down town of 150 to 200
feet and build a temple which will be
one of the stateliest and most beautiful
buildings, in the city. The decorations,
ornamentations and embellishments are
to be emblematic of the customs, tradi
tions and teachings of the Shrlne. Lodge
and committee-room and an ample
auditorium are to be Included in the
space.
