Three Month of Seaeon.
Since the opening of the crop year, hop
shipments from Oregon have aggrcgaitd
3!.!7 bales, or 57:U bales less than were
shipped In the corresponding period last
year. The decrease Is the consequence of
the lighter demand for hops' this year.
The shipments for the first three months

With Few Sellers.
The condition of the New York market
for Western apples Is reported by the
Fruitmena Oulde of November 2S. as fol
io s:
in the local market the tone was firm on
11 tha Hood River and Western box stock.
Some sales of Hoof Klver were reported at
the close up to .X .".0 per box In a small wav.
and while as a rule S3 was given as the
outside quotation there were few sellers
willing to sell small lots at the figure. Here
and there a little business In fancy Jons
thana was noted op to $4 per box. There
were some Spltxenbergs In boxes that -soid
out at 3 to 1:1.2.1 per box. The holders are
not disposed to force the market on tha
fancy box apples in spite of the ratber
liberal arrivals. Covering the general range
on the Hood Rivers the market was quoted
at from $2 to $" per box as to slie. grade
and variety. The other far Western box
applea sold at from f 1.2-1 to 2.75 per bushel
box In a jobbing way.
SHIP KCAI.KS WITH -POTATOES.
Ore ham Fanner Can Prove Their Weight
Are Correct.
There is no Improvement in the potato
rrarkft either here or In San Francisco.
There Is some local buying In a small Job
bing way. but shippers are not operating
freely. The latest San Francisco advlcea
report a dull and overloaded market.
According to a San Francisco letter re
ceived yesterday, a car of potatoes that hud
been shipped by a number of Oresham
farmers was unloaded there a few days ngo.
The quality of the potatoes was alt right,
but what astonished tha receivers was to
find the shippers scales aljo in the car.
Whether the shippers merely overlooked
them or distrusted the scales used by the
California potato men Is not clear.

Yesterday's fruit receipts consisted of a
car each of oranges and bananas, the latter
in fine condition. Japanese oranges are.
c'eanlng up well. Anotjier shipment of
about 20O0 boxes is due next week. The
apple market continues easy under plentiful
offerings. The general run of prices on the
street is 00 cents to $1.00 per box. though an
occasional fancy lot goes at a higher price.
Among the vegetaftla arrivals was a car
of Los Angeles celery. Small truck was in
aufTlclent supply and In good demand.
Eggs Slower hut Firm.
While the egg market is very firm and
will doubtless continue so as long as re
ceipts ar small, the movement has become
lighter all around because of the elvatrd
prices.
The demand for poultry was active yester
day, chickens and ducks especially being
asked for, and prices were firm. Goese
moved slowly and there was not much call
for turkeys.
There were no naw features In the butter
er cheese markets.

FREE TO ADVANCE
Restraint Is Thrown Off in the
Stock Market.
CHANGE IN ITS TEMPER
Forthcoming Presidential Message
Expected to tie Mild as Regards
Attitude Towards Corpora
tions Money Firmer. '
NEW YORK. Dec. 4. The restraint under
which operation for higher price In the
Mock market have labored during the week
wa thrown off to a large extent today, and
the advance wa resumed with more appear
ance of harmony than the movement has
shown for many days.
The change In the temper of the market
was not explained by any striking Item of
news, although there as much discussion
on the floor of the Stock Exchange of the
supposed content of the forthcoming mes
sage of President Roosevelt. The word -was
passed around that the tone of the mes
sage was mild and that It contained noth
ing calculated to frighten the most timid
speculator. It was also announced that a
modlncation of the Sherman antl-trufct law
would be asked for to provide against Its
application to other than unreasonable com
bination In restraint of trade, and so open
the way to allow agreement among rail
roads on rates.
The action of the market owed something
to the relief afforded by the speculative
liquidation already effected and of which
there wa evidence of a subsidence today.
This was notably true of United Sta.tcs Stiel,
in which the selling Jia been perslBtcnt
throughout the w-eck. The freedom with
which that stock advanced, although to a
moderate extent, was of material effect in
shaping sentiment on the whole market.
Lower priced stocks continued a prominent
feature and in some of these the only rea
son advanced for volatile upshoot was the
activity of market pools which had accumu
lated large amounts of chosen stocks and
were holding them out of the market for
higher prices.
The Gould group, led by Wnhash pre
ferred, was a conspicuous feature of the
dealings. Great Northern preferred -A-as the
leader of 'the high-priced stocks.
The money market continued stiffer than
of late In reflection of the large demands
making upon banking suppliee, rates for
call loans ranging higher than since Janu
ary, when the money market waj Just
emerging from abnormal condition follow
ing the panic and the premium on currency
w-as but newiy established. The speculation
appear entirely unapprehensive and confi
dent that the Interval will be easily bridged
to the period of disbursement of Jantiaty
Interest and dividend money. Preparations
were in progress today for participation in
the Panama Canal bond Issue, for which
subcrlptions to the amount cX X30.000.0O0
are to be opened tomorrow.
Bonds were strong. Total sales, par value.
$6,330,000. United States bonds were un
changed on call.

Weather conditions have, been Irregular,
but the arrival of a cold wave, following
unreasonable mild temperatures, has stim

and even helped business at the South at
some points, though holding of cotton and
low prices therefor have tended to check

trade and there is noticeable more complaint
of these than of business generally, more
particularly at the South.
Holiday trade shows sign of expansion
and comparisons with a year ago In all
lines are naturally in favor of current busi
ness. In some lines of wholesale trade there
are evidences of more quiet conditions.
In manufacturing there are no evidences
of halting In the tendency toward expan
sion of output previously noted and the
preparations made or making In this line
show signs of large trade being looked foe

TONE-IS BULLISH
But Wheat Prices Fluctuate
Nervously at Chicago.
OFFERINGS WELL TAKEN
Advance Abroad, Light Northwest
Receipts and Unfavorable Crop
Report Are the. Principal
Strengthening Factors.
CHICAGO. Dec. 4. Although sentiment
in the wljeat pit was bullish, the market
fluctuated nervously within a half-cent
range and at the close wa a shade higher
to He lower compared with, yesterday's
final quotations. Leading longs bought
moderately throughout the day .and short
also covered quite freely. There wa liber
al realization at times, but offering were
readily absorbed, although at times the
price eased off a trifle "as the result of the
selling. An advance of one-half penny at
Liverpool, continued small receipts in the
Northwest and a report of a St. Louis trade
journal showing the poor condition of the
Fall-sown crop were the principal strength
ening influences. " Bain or enow in the
Winter wheat belt was the chief bearish
factor. Trade in cash wheat .was quiet and
prices held steady. Final quotations on
December were at $1,054. May closed at
$1.10. and July at $1.03.
Wet weather In the corn belt had a bull
ish effect on the com market. An official
forecast of a cold wave tonight, however,
caused considerable selling late in the day,
which resulted In the market closing steady
wlth price unchanged to 14 e higher, com
pared with the previous close. Final quo
tations on December were at 61 c and on
May at 6.314 c. Offerings of corn at the
sample tables were light and prices were up
He on a moderate demand.
Moderate activity and strength marked
today's trading in oats, the market closing
strong with prices up H t tec. compared
with yesterday' close.- The strong position
of the cash grain, which was up 1 to 14c
today, waa the chief reason for the firm
ness of the future deliveries. Receipts con
tinned light and shipping demand was again,
active. December closed at 50c and May
at 52 4 iff 52 He
Provisions were quiet and steady. At the
close price mere unchanged to 5s74o
lower.
