of the University Club have received
notice of a special meeting of the club for
tomorrow night at g o'clock, to consider
a report to be submitted by the finance
committee, relative to future plans for
club quarters. A suggestion has been
made that the present site, at the north
west corner of Stark and West Park
streets, be sold and a new site purchased
on which a new clubhouse shall be
erected. An offer of JW.C.a) is said to
have been made for the present property
of the club, its location practically being
In the retail district of the city. The
southeast corner of Eleventh and Yam
hill streets. Is believed to be the choice
of a majority of the members for the
new building. This quarter block Is re
ported to be In the market at J50.000. and
was one of the sites recently considered
by the Arlington Club. The property is
owned by the Ladd estate.

REAL ESTATE FIKM TELLS HOW
IT SPENT MONEY.
l'ublis-hcs Folder Descriptive in De
tail or ITnderground Im
provements Put In.
A decided Innovation In real estate ad
vertising has been introduced by Roun
tree 4 Diamond. 241 Stark street. Jn pre
senting Prospect Park for sale. Not con
tent with merely stating tiiat Prospect
Park is the "Cream of Irvinglon," nam
ing its location and tho carlines by which
It !b reached, this firm has published a
little folder, entitled "Prospect Park in
the Making."
Beginning with the flrst spade full of
earth turned, tho Improvements that have
been Installed In Prospect Park are fully
described, illustrated and made clear by
engineer's drawings. The spending of
U''.' in transforming a piece of ground
into a residence community Is a vast un
dertaking, with which few people are
familiar. Little Is known by the average
buyer of a home site about the extent,
character and completeni.s of the com
plex system of drainage, gas and water
service that Is buried under the ground.
Thin folder not only satisfies a buyer
that he Is securing every modern con
venience, scientifically Installed, but goes
Into minute detail, showing by wash
drawings the manner, for Instance, in
which considerable money was saved by
economical excavation for the Installa
tion of sewer, gas and water mains. An
other iliagram describes the unique de
signing of street corners, introducing, for
the first time In Portland, a cement walk
Intersection without a corner, graceful
curves being followed.
A largo drawing shows a cross section
of the street, locating each main, the
character and thickness of each layer of
the asphalt pavement, the width of the
sldewnlk. parking, distance from street to
property line, and the perfect system of
street drainage.
W hen the reader finishes the perusal of
this little folder he is impressed with the
fact that Prospect Park is the best im
I roved section of the City of Portland.
No money lian been spared lo make this
Impression correct. Prospect Park is out
of the ordinary. Within ten minutes of
down town. In the best part of Irvington,
so magnificently improved and delight
fully situated, it is admitted to he the
very best home site property In the City
of Portland.
OUT FOR DODSON'S SCALP
Certain Architects and Councllincn
Don't Like Building Inspector.
Kfforts b certain architects and
members of the City Council to pass an
ordinunce ousting' Building' Inspector
Pobson from his position, will prove
futile. It is believed, because of the
brilliant record Mr. lobson has made
and because of the unfairness of such
a proposition. The plan as stated is
to make it necessary for the Building
Inspector to have not less than ten
years' experience.. This "would ac
complish the object of those . opposing
Mr. Dobson.
Building1 Inspector Dobson has been
very strict in the enforcement of the
building ordinances, and in so doing
has angered some of the architects,
among them D. I "Williams. He has
also become greatly disliked by certain
Councilmen, because he refused to al
low tho Council to give a special per
mit to a builder violating the law In
Kast Portland. Mr. Dobson's action
In that matter resulted in one of the
most sweeping changes of front ever
experienced by the City Council. It
forced a written opinion from City
Attorney Kavanaugh, In which the lat
ter declared that a special permit given
by tho Council Is worthless, being
without legal authority.
Mayor lane has supported Mr. Dob
son throughout, and yesterday morning
vetoed an ordinance, which was passed
at the last regular session of the Coun
cil, the terras of which permit thinner
brick walls outside the fire limits. Mr.
Dobson was bitterly opposed to the
ordinance.

Mayor Says Contractors Are
Raising Prices.
STREET JOBS EXPENSIVE
All Kinds or Public Improvement
Seem to Feel a General Stiffen
ing in Cost Vnder Present Sys
tem of Handling Projects.
"This business Is just about going to
end In the city putting in a plant of Its
own and doing the street-improvement
work itself." declared Mayor Lane, dur
ing the session of the ntreet committee of
the Citv Executive Board, yesterday
afternoon. The occasion for the remark
was that the contractors In certain In
stances have been raising their prices on
all kinds of work. One particular case
was the Kast Third-street fill, from East
Oak street to Hawthorne avenue, on
which the Pacific Bridge Company alone
had a bid. It was for $73,000, being about
$40 above the City Kngtneer's estimate,
it had been advertised five times, and
the Executive Board members are be
coming weary trying to get a reasonable
bid.
Mayor Lane evidently believes that it
would be a paying investment for the city
to install Its own plant for doing contract
work on the streets, and It would appear,
from the remark made at this meeting,
that he intends recommending something
of tho kind in his annual message. The
statement created considerable comment
among the various contractors.
The street committee, after discussion,
and after talking over the matter at
length with City Engineer Taylor and
the contractors In the case, voted to ac
cept the bitulithlc pavement on Killings
worth avenue, over which there has been
so much controversy. It is a Job that
cost $70,000. Much fault was found with
it by the people living on the street, and
some repairs were made, both In the
street and in the curbing and sidewalks.
It was on this Job that Mayor Lane and
the memlers of the street committee cre
ated much comment by making a per
sonal Inspection. They found many "hol
low" spots In the sldewaiks, and com
pelled the Pacific Bridge Company, the
contracting firm, to repair the places.
This waei after the City Engineer's in
spectors -had gone over the improvement
and had certified it to City Engineer
Taylor as having been done In accord
ance with the plans and specifications of
the city, and as being a good Job. It is
because of this fact that the Mayor has
decided to Investigate the inspectors' de
partment. One of the largest contracts for bitu
lithlc improvement to be let this year is
that awarded to the Taclfic Bridge Com
pany by the street committee yesterday
afternoon. It Is on Belmont, from East
Fortieth to East Sixty-second streets, and
will cost $H0.000.
