The prisoner persisted in his refusal to
see old friends, many of whom called to

bankruptcy for Van Vllssengens prop

ens and W. C. Selpp. who were the first
to discover that the notes bouKM f"
the disgraced real estate dealer had beet,
forged. They set up in their petition that
a receiver was necessary to prevent the
dissipation of the assets.
After a sleepless night the pri

luxuries which come with an ample

Mrs Van Vllssengen. despite the ex,

How Fraud Wa IMscovered.
T J. lffens, who, with -William C.
Zeipp he'd over " of worthless paper
and brought the action which resulted In
, the real estate dealer's downfall, today
threw some interesting light on the pro
ceedings. He said:
"I have known Van Vllssengen since he
was a boy. and always considered him a
big-hearted fellow, who would share his
last penny with a friend. Having re
garded him as one of the shrewdest brok
ers in the West, I could hardly believe
mv own suspicions when last week I dls
rovered peculiarities about mortgage
notes I had purchased from him. Mr.,
fvipp 'so became suspicious. We learned
lhat the papers were drafted on properties
on which other people were holding origl
pal mortgages. We called -Van' to our
office and told him what we had found.
"What was our surprise when, after a
few minutes, he boldly confessed that
the papers were worthless forgeries.
He begged us to return to his office
Faturriay morning and talk further. On
Saturday he explained that for the last
JS years or more he had been forging
notes and selling them. Most of the
money for the last few years, he de
clared, had been used in paying inter
est en his forgeries. He said It would
almost amount to a million dollars, and
that about 25 people would suffer. We
attll refused to believe him until he
took us to his office and displayed the
table especially constructed for his
work.
Had Three Alternatives.
'He confessed he had been thinking
over the situation for a long time. He
said: -Well. I have figured out that
there are three ways open to me
flight suicide or the penitentiary. I
have chosen the last, and am ready to
go with you Monday morning to the
State's Attorney's of flce'surrcoder my
self and go to Jail. I will ask only
that yvi remain quiet until Monday.""
Van Vllssengen is said by his friends
In recent years to have lived extrava
gantly. His offices at 172 Washington
street are said to have cost him in
maintenance about $10,001 annually.
"He has been spending money lav

Consul for The Netherlands. "He won
the confidence of the Dutch residents
of the city, and 1 am afraid they will
be among the heavy losers."
