FAVOR A
Large Interests Want Lower
Stock Prices.
MARKET IS IRREGULAR
Sellins Orders From Domestic and
Foreign Sources Cause an Early
Decline, Which tater Gives
Place lo Recovery.
NEW1 YORK. Nov. 11 Mixed views over
the speculative outlook foind their retiec
tlon In the spotty and somewhat Irregular
tone or the stock market today. Th con
tenta of letters and circulars from stock
commission houses show the growth of con
servatism In that element, due to the ex
tant and the raoidlty of the advance in
prices which has occurred since the elec
tion. Point was given to this advice by the
reactionary tone ot the market at the close
of last week.
The reault was the receipt of a fair vol
ume of selling orders from outside sources
with the opening of the week. Some of
these selling orders came from abroau.
1 he origin of a good part of the foreign
nrdera was ascribed to Germany, where
the agitation over the Kaiser's course waa
said to be a disturbing factor. The early
decline which these selling orders caused
gave place to recovery later.
The upward movement wes constrained
and languid by comparison with last week's
vlgorlus movements and the prominence
of stocks of a minor grade in the rise left
It with less convincing power on sentiment
tcnard the miirket. Even when it was
sought to remedy this by bringing forward
again the high-grade railroad slocks, it
was evident .that they were not ao readily
rpoved aa was the case last week.
Specific reasons for the check to the
speculative accumulation were not clear. It
was based apparently more on the general
consideration of the extent to which dis
tribution had been going on at the high
level of prices and the suspicion that with
such distribution -ffected. the market would
enjoy less fostering csre from the power
ful Interests which have hart it In control
all throvgh the Summer and up to the time
of the election.
The court decision that the American To
bacco Company Is In violation of the Slier
man anti-trust law is receiving closer At
tention and the further study of its con
tents Intensifies the Impression of its wide
scope and the sweeping application It must
have lo all the great corporations. More
attention also waa given to the question of
tariff revision and its probable bearing on
business activity and on special Interests.
News of the Government suit to collect back
taxes from the American Sugar Refintng
Company weakened that stock. A decline
In General Electric waa traceable to re
ports of the orders received and the volume
of sales of the company for the third quar
ter of the year, showing so large a decline
from the corresponding quarter in recent
years as to dampen enthusiasm. This re
port was also published last week, but
w-lthout effect until today.
I'nlted Statea Steel continued to strug
gle against the consideration of the rapid
rate at which It has already risen and the
statement of Its president that the present
rate of activity had grown only to 00 per
cent of the corporation's capacity. Another
reduction In the quotations for copper at
the New York Metal Exchange and a severe
decline in the price of London copper war
rants were accompanied by admlsslona from
some of the large Interests In the trade of
a lull In demand from domestic consumers."
The fact of this admission, aa much aa
that of the decline Itself. Inspired the feel
ing that the large Interests back of the
slock market were prepared to countenance
a reaction.
Bonds were Irregular. Total aalea. par

WINNIPEG GETS 1205 CARS
Absence ot Flour Trade Adds lo the
Weakness of the Chicago Mar-
ket Corn Easy and Oats
Are Steady.
CHICAGO. Nov. 16. Following a light
advance at the opening, the wheat market
was weak the remainder of the day. pit
traders In general being disposed to sell.
Offerings, however, were held In check to
some extent by continued dry weather In
many parts of the Winter wheat belt and
by a report which claimed a 20 per cent
decrease In acreage seeded to wheat this
year In Kansas, compared with the previous
year. There was no evidence of selling by
the leading longs and trade during a greater
part ot the session wag quiet. The chief
reason for the selling pressure was the
continued free movement of wheat to the
Northwestern and Southwestern markets.
Receipts at Winnipeg today were 120u cars
against 641 the corresponding day last year,
and those at Minneapolla and Duluth. were
also liberal. At Kansas City and St. Louis
the arrivals were more than double those
of last year. The total absence of flour
trade added to the weakness of the market.
The close was weak at almost the lowest
figures, final quotation on December be
ing at 1.02?4 and on May $1.07.
Corn opened firm with wheat, but soon
weakened on proflt-takii.g and continued
weak the remainder of the session. Prices
at the sample tables were '4 c lower and
Eastern demand was very slock. The close
waa weak at the lowest point with Decem
ber ?4c lower at 624c. May closed at
62 He.
Oata displayed moderate weakness in sym
pathy with wheat and corn. Demand for
tash oata was slack and. prices at . the
sample tables were steady to He lower. At
the close December waa hie lower at 4&3ic.
May closed at 50 c.
Enormous receipts 'of live hogs at Western
packing centers caused weakness in pro
visions early. At the close prices were 2c
lower to 24c higher.
